    Disaster!

Well I thought as it's a cool day, brewing up in the garage would mean less likely the cut out on the Burco would er, cut in. Today, instead of cutting in 45 minutes into the boil, it decided to do it before the boil had even started. It's at 95, so nearly there but I think I'm going to have to...

    Will they go?

Quick question brewers as I've got permission to do a brew this morning :-) ... I've got 100g of Goldings and 100g of Cascade, will they combine nicely or am I better going for a SMaSH? Ta

    Love brewing - Liverpool

On a visit to see my son, found this HBS on West Derby Road, Liverpool and it's a little gold mine! They had a good selection of hops, a few all grain kits made up so you can brew a Black sheep clone or a Theakston's best etc., a few two can kits, loads of different wine kits... and I could go...

    Buffalo keeps overheating

Bugger! Doing AG #2 and my buffalo boiler keeps overheating and cutting out so I get a rolling boil for a few minutes, then nothing for a minute, then back on again... What damage is it doing to the boiler? And more importantly, will my beer be OK?? :?

    AG #1 done!

Well I've done my first all grain, via the BIAB method and things were OK-ish... I used the iPhone app, Brewpal after a couple of others said they used it and got good results, however my first mistake was probably not actually following it to the letter and doing the volumes it was saying...

    The order is placed...

Well that's it, the order has been placed for 25kg of maris otter, a bag of fuggles, challenger and chinook hops, plus the yeast and irish moss so that'll be me doing BIAB as soon as it's all delivered. One slight problem, I've lost the recipe I was going to follow for my first try, any...

    Wilko's cider... with spray malt????

Picked up a wilko's cider kit yesterday as it came with a free bag of brewing sugar... but there's only 1kg in the bag and the kit demands 1.5kg. I've got some light spray malt from a beer kit I chucked on and was wondering if anyone had used that in a cider? I'm thinking it'll be  but...

BIAB... er bag (if that isn't a tautology?)

well my 30l Buffalo boiler has arrived at home (cue one very stern e-mail from the missus asking WTF I'd been buying) and now I'm looking at the bag options. I don't know anyone who can wield a needle and thread to the degree where I'd be happy to let them create a bag capable of holding the...

    BIAB here I come!

A big thanks to rpt for pointing us in the direction of Nesbitts Ebay clearance presence, a cut price 30 litre Buffalo boiler is on its way to me as soon as funds clear. They didn't have a 40 litre one on there unfortunately so to do my 5 gallon brews I'm envisaging a bit of jiggery-pokery is...

    Thoughts please...

Only just missed out on Kev's amazing bargain (by about 19 hours!!!), so I'm still hunting around for the ideal BIAB container for a 23 litre brew. As always I look to our wonderful sponsors and have found this item: http://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk/33l ... p-576.html What does everyone...

Brewers in the Lancs/ Cumbria region

And more specifically, brewers who have moved to the dark side  My full thumbs up from the missus to move to BIAB has been rescinded to a "more investigation required before permission is granted" approval. She has asked me to look into how long it all takes of my time, what smells...

    Sigh...

Well after much hinting and leaving of subtle links, it appears that all my family and friends decided against buying me anything to do with moving to BIAB from kits for Christmas. They do however believe I need to take more showers judging by the amount of smelly stuff they bought me :sulk...

To get my understanding of processes...

I'm not at the stage yet of venturing into the AG world (damn you Christmas and the money I have to lay out, I want to spend on me!), but that isn't stopping me being like a sponge for all information on the process. As some of you know, I'll be going for the BIAB approach and a link in a...

    Just wondering...

So Piddledribble's post has got me thinking... I know I can't even begin to afford an AG set-up, but puravida put up a cracking post on how to do BIAB using a sod off large stock pot, couple of bits of muslin and other bits and bobs that I've got. My question is, if I do go down this BIAB route...

    Vimto cider

Hi folks! At the weekend I kicked a vimto cider off, but I only had youngs wine yeast knocking about... It took a few days to get going, but it's now fizzing away happily. What effect will using a wine yeast compared to a cider yeast have had on the finished brew? Anything I can do to help...

    That got their attention...

I've had 19 litres of apple juice (plus normal additions) bubbling very quietly for the last week, no activity through the air lock, but a quick peek showed something was going on in the FV so no panic from me. Oh OK, I was a bit concerned to begin with before I peeked as all beer I've done has...

    Maturing cider questions

OK, before I take the plunge and go for 5 gallons of cider instead of just the one, once the primary fermentation is done and you move it off the yeast cake (@ one month?), it then goes into a new sterile FV and left for as many months as you can stand before priming, then bottling. Q1: does...

And a cider yeast question now!

Noticed that the little sachet Youngs cider yeast is enough for 5 gallons... I'm only do a gallon (or so) at a time... A) do I have to be careful about how much yeast I add, ie exactly 1/5 of a pack? B) how do I store the remaining yeast... Actually, first part of this question should be, can...

    Cider help!

Today I was planning on getting my first turbo cider, 4 litres of apple juice, mug of tea, cider yeast and nutrient and some malic acid... Tragedy, my LHBS hasn't got any malic acid :( My question, can I still kick off the cider and then add the malic acid once I get some by mid-week? Cheers

Revisiting the rehydrate or not debate

I'm a few days in to brewing my Milestone IPA kit and just thought I'd reignite the to rehydrate or not the yeast. In the past I've been a lazy little sausage and just sprinkled them on top and let nature take it's course. And within 48 hours, the airlock has been bubbling and the krausen has...
