Do I need to treat my water?

Thanks - I've sent him a message. sorry I missed your post You're correct - Murphys got back to me and pointed me towards brewUK (£27). After looking at the water report from by supplier (Severn Trent Water) I'm not sure how useful a water test will be. As there are two supply...

Do I need to treat my water?

thanks strange-steve. I've got an API aquarium mater test kit. but I dont think it does alkalinity - I'll get one of the salifert kits I discovered this company from another forum thread http://laboratory.murphyandson.co.uk/our-products/water It suggested a water test was about £15...

Do I need to treat my water?

Thanks for the reply. I generally don't brew english ales, mainly APA's and hoppy american style beers. At the moment I'm brewing a Weissbier I've just had another read of the water report and its less useful than I thought. Its split into different sections for test taken at different...

Do I need to treat my water?

I've been reading a couple of articles about water treatment, so wondered if I need to treat my water. I'm going to start using a Campden tablet to remove chlorine. but not sure If I need to address Ph and salts etc. I've downloaded my local water quality summary report. Key parts are -...

All grain setup as Sous Vide!

Haha, sounds like a luddite to me. He probably doesn't like how sous vide allows the average person to cook food perfectly. But I will admit it removes some of the skill and 'art' from cooking. I'd ask him which of the following steaks was cooked best. Then explain that no chef, no matter...

All grain setup as Sous Vide!

no sure if anyone has mentioned this before.. but if you have an electric all grain setup it doubles as a pretty good sous vide! for anyone that doesn't know what sous vide is - http://modernistcuisine.com/2013/01/why-cook-sous-vide/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc3VYt1G97g

    Detachable temperature probes

I use 'PT100 probe'. They take a couple of weeks to arrive, but they're the best I've found so far. Fully sealed and good quality stainless steel. These are similar, but have a detachable din style connector on the probe, so maybe better fit for your requirements. The cheap ones that come...

My all grain build so far

my first ever all grain brew today.. I decided to start with Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale it takes longer than you think! I learnt a few quirks of my system and made a few beginner mistakes, but mostly went OK. a few pics...

My all grain build so far

not that much. the box itself was the most expensive single part, although I found it on eBay for £20. it was new old stock. Most of the components were ordered on AliExpress from china. switches were about £1.50 each, the same for the LED's. PID + SSR were about £10...

My all grain build so far

Thanks! I roughly based it around the electric brewery. http://www.theelectricbrewery.com/ there are instructions on their site that walk you through the build. The keg polishing was surprisingly easy! I bought a single dronco flapping disk for the angle grinder and spent about 20 mins per keg.

My all grain build so far

It feel like ages ago I started this project, but with a bit of time off over xmas I made some solid progress. I've tried to keep costs down, but build a safe, solid, all grain rig. I'm using stainless kegs and stainless fittings as much as possible. I've welded 1/2 BSP connectors directly...

Belgium Trappist Triple - Brupaks Beers of the World

This definitely prefers higher fermenting temperatures. I had it at 19 and it got stuck. I racked it off and bumped it up to 23 and seems to be going well. As its a Belgian, it actually makes sense to ferment it higher.

    All grain build

Update; I'm trying to create quite a 'clean' build. So welding instead of using bulkhead fittings. And making everything as modular as possible. I bought a couple of 4Kw elements. Had trouble figuring out the tread size, but they seem to be 1"bsp. I managed to find some cheap 1" 316...

    All grain build

I called fullers about the kegs. Asked what they wanted me to do with them. they said they would get back to me within a couple of days. Over a month later and no reply so they're now part of my home brewery :)

Belgium Trappist Triple - Brupaks Beers of the World

Thanks for the concern with the heater! You're right, I think pretty much all of these tube heaters say they must be mounted horizontally, not vertically like mine. But saying that there are a few things you can do to make them safe. When you mount the heater vertically, the surrounding air...
