    My fond farewell Oldjiver

This used to be the best forum on the net. Now with adverts, paid membership, and a new format that is clearly not a patch on the old one. All without any thought as to what members of years standing think, it is time to move on. I bitterly regret this, but as Austin has not even bothered to...

    A case for herms

I have been quite pleased with the heat retaining properties of my IGLOO mash tun, but I got a surprise while doing a mash yesterday. I usually fill the tun to the top with liquor a few degrees over strike heat and let it settle a few minutes to pre -heat. Then when at correct temp I drain it to...

    Kings Head Bildeston

Popped into the Kings Head pub near Hadleigh Suffolk today. I had read online that it was a BrewPub. What a lovely old place. The village is a typical Suffolk mixture of medieval timber framed old buildings round a square with a clock tower. The pub is unspoilt, a bunch of old boys round the...

    Youngs Ale Yeast low attenuation

I only use two yeasts, Youngs Ale Yeast, and Munton Brewers Gold. I have had the same problem with youngs occasionally, a very high finishing gravity? My latest brew is six days old and stuck on 1020 (OG1048) It was mashed at 66c, everything went normally, Very good krausen. Done the usual e.g...

Back from holiday and brewing again

Came back to holiday home after 2 months holiday abroad this week. (lifes hard). Yesterday was the first chance I had to get the boiler out. Nice calm day so I did the brew on the decking. Didn't try anything different just the usual bitter, lightly hopped and malty. 20 litres 4kg MO 200gms...

    Foreign beer

4 weeks into my 6 week break in Malta. Badly missing brew days. Local lager is called Cisk , bog standard international type lager. I found a Dutch lager in the shop next to our hotel called 7\8. Its 7.8% and tastes very good. Problem is it puts you to sleep! so I stick to Cisk mainly. Life's hard!

    Understanding water reports

My local water report is somewhat confusing in that it gives varying quantities for what seems to be the same thing i.e... Calcium (mg/l) 137.2 Calcium carbonate (mg/l) 343 (mg/l = milligrammes per litre or the same as parts per million) However...

    Beer TV programme?

Most hobbys have had a classic TV programme made about them. i.e. The best gardening programme ever made "The Victorian Kitchen Garden", and the wonderful chess "Master Game", but never a brewing slot?? Seems to be a widespread hobby, perhaps we should be lobbying. Lots on Youtube, but its not...

    Trip to the "Wibblers" brewery

Yesterday (Saturday) I drove to the wildly beautiful Dengie Peninsular to partake in the Wibblers open day. Well worth the trip, immaculate brewery and warm welcome. Nigel Sadler, the commercial manager was giving a very interesting talk on the history of beer to an attentive audience when I...

    My perfect sparger

I just have to mention my £1 sparger again.(ASDA cake cover with holes drilled) My new setup means my boiler tap sits directly over my mash tun. I just turn on the tap to match the flow out and the fly sparge is done in minutes. Plus you can see whats going on. Perfect!

Electrical connection- the solution with pictures

I have been wondering how to connect my old round pin element as leads are not available. You can buy just the fitting and make up a lead, but this is a cheaper and, I think, just as effective way. It is based on the way Tesco elements are butchered.! The connectors are just 35amp wire joiners...

    Electrical connections

As the Tesco type square elements seem to be connected to the leads by crimping, soldering or proper leads, it occurred to me that the old type elements with the two round, one flat type elements could be connected in the same way? I havent seen any "push on" round connectors, but I am sure they...

    First "proper" shiny

As I am addicted to my plastic mash tun (IGLOO) I have lacked a bit of tin (stainless) But I have sold my semi-shiny ACE boiler and ordered a 33litre boiler from Rob the Miller. Got to sort out the element now.

    Round pin kettle element

Asked about kettle elements in a local old fashioned electrical shop recently. He went into the showroom attic and came out with one he had for many years. Charged me £3.50. :o Trouble is its the two round pin and one flat, and he didn't have a lead. They all seem to be 3 flat now. Anyone got...

    Wonderful news

Some may remember me making the label below to cheer up my mate when he was diagnosed with cancer. He rang me yesterday to tell me he had the all clear and was completely cured. He drank my beer in celebaration and said it was wonderful!! Thats the best reason I ever had for brewing beer...
