Red wine kit: a hint of chlorine in the bouquet

Had to Google VWP - haven't seen that over here, and can't seem to find what it's made of, other than it having chlorine in. But for that matter I don't know if the bags of Na2S2O5 I get from the local shop are only that, and don't also have things that would contribute the chlorine taste. It's...

Red wine kit: a hint of chlorine in the bouquet

My usual sterilisation regimen is to use bottlewash (the pink stuff) in hot water, soak for 20 mins, rinse well with tap water, then sodium metabisulphite (in cold water) for another 20 mins. My local homebrew shop says you don't have to rinse that but I do unless the bottles are going into...

Lack of WGJ: Pineapple and Apple juice WOW?

Update: I made this in the end and added in some dried apricots too, after mincing and soaking them in hot water. Fermented it until dry, and racked it for the second time last week. Had to have a little taste to see of course, and it's quite lovely. Will rest it awhile yet but it'll be good...

Red wine kit: a hint of chlorine in the bouquet

A few months ago I bottled a Cabernet Shiraz made from a local kit. It was a slow ferment over our (mild) winter, racked once and bottled (from memory, I've lost my blardy notebook) in August. So it's quite young, however I'm an impatient sort and have of course been drinking a few to see how...

    How posh are you

Well I had to localise a few (British landmarks, North star, that sort of thing) and had quite a few partials but probably ended up at 21 +/- 2 for the partials. (Didn't say I could do them well, mind....) Around here we wouldn't call a lot of these "posh" though. Driving a tractor, f'rinstance...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2012?

Does ginger beer count? Quiet year for me, 18 gallons, mostly wines. Forum total: 6724.5 gallons

    WoW - No yeast nutrient

I put on a WOW recently with no nutrient and it certainly hasn't slowed it down, it's bubbling away like a mad thing.

    Rice and Raisin Wine

Made some of this a few weeks ago and have a glass of it next to me as I type. It has some dark smoky aromatics, verging on acrid. Smells a little... medicinal. (My son's version? "Congrats Dad, you've successfully brewed a cleaning product", although he's not a drinker so only likes a very...

    Vimto Wine/Cider

Yup, the stuff I had was carbonated and canned... didn't know there was a cordial, or for that matter, tbert33, multiple flavours. The can was purple. Looks like the can on the left of the Products section of their web page.

    Dates

Thanks, I was wondering about this being a bit skinny. WGJ is hard to get here though and expensive at the best of times. Might have to scrounge up some dark sugar... Not so sure about the winter liqueur, though; it'll be high summer here by then. And I'm not a huge brandy fan.

    Dates

Not expiry dates, but dates like wot comes from palm trees. Anyone used these in a wine recipe? I've got some dates (chopped), some raisins, currants, some dried chopped apricots, and a good few oranges, all come by on the cheap. So now I'm looking for what I can add (besides sugar, water and...

    Vimto Wine/Cider

Being of a foreign persuasion I was wondering what this Vimto thing was that you were all going on about, and was therefore pleased to discover some (in a can) down at the local UK imported goods store. $2.50 too, not a bad price for an imported drink can. So I bought one, and drank it. Now I...

    Bottle Washing tips and tricks

Hot water soak followed by a bit of work with some ordinary cooking oil and a scourer of some kind (for the difficult ones) generally works for me.

    Anyone grow their own grapes?

I can't help with sending you any cuttings or anything as it's a bit far and I think the customs department might frown upon it, but yes I have a few vines - two white in the back garden (variety called "Niagara" but who knows? Quite scenty and sweet) and two red in the front ("Albany surprise"...

Lack of WGJ: Pineapple and Apple juice WOW?

I'll let you know how it works out then! Might have to be tomorrow that I start it as I'm short of DJs and think I'll have to rack the rice and raisin again and I couldn't be bothered tidying the kitchen so I can sterilise up another DJ. Besides, it's bed time. :) The homebrew shop varietal...

Lack of WGJ: Pineapple and Apple juice WOW?

Thanks for that. I can get dark red grape quite easily, and my local homebrew shop sells proper grape juices (you know, the ones with names like Cabernet and Shiraz etc), just for a bit more money. They do also sometimes have whites in, it's just the reds are more popular, and of course the...

Lack of WGJ: Pineapple and Apple juice WOW?

Ta. Was more concerned about the unholy alliance of pineapple, apple and grape with regard to flavour, but anyway. As it happens they are dodgy South African juices and a bit vague about labelling generally, but sugars are 30/250 in the apple and 27/250 in the pineapple/GJ blend, so scaling to...

Lack of WGJ: Pineapple and Apple juice WOW?

In this benighted land (actually it's quite lovely in most respects) it does seem difficult to get cheap supermarket no-added-sugars-or-preservatives WGJ. So I find myself contemplating the bottle of cheap pineapple and WGJ blend I bought the other day, plus the other bottle of apple juice. And...

    Kiwi Fruit

I made a kiwifruit and babaco a year or so ago (funny thing like a pawpaw, doesn't grow too well around here so they ripened on the windowsill and I think were a bit low in sugars as a result). First bottle, after a slow brew and rack and a month or so of rest, was horrid and most went down the...

    Wine Homebrew Logging Software

Hi Just downloaded your program and bunged in the first batch. Good concept and execution, so thumbs up from me. And thanks. Might have found a wee bug or two though: My total sugar is NaNg, so obviously something I input isn't liked by the software. Also notice that although the grape juice...
