    Gelatine For Finnings

Thinking of trying Gelatine as a finning before bottling. I have Gelatine leaves and powder at home. Hoping to use the powder since it's out of date and needs using up. Is this a good idea ? What quantity of powder / leaves should I use ? and how should I mix it ? I used Shellfish based...

    Some Fementation and Conditioning Questions

Been doing some more brewing in the last few weeks and have a few questions. Apologies if they have already been answered.... 1. Last two brews were a bit slow to ferment with the cold British weather. Just wondering when you pitch the yeast should you have the lid on the bucket quite tight...

Winter Warmer slow To Ferment With Gervin Yeast

Just pitched the yeast last night for my Geordie Winter Warmer. Nothing seems to have happened this morning though. Gave the wort a stir this evening and wrapped the FV in a fleese. Some small bubbles and a thin layer so far but nothing outstanding, hoping there will be some progress...

Adding Blackberries Or Elderberrries To a Stout Kit

I've noticed quite a few of you make a 'berry stout'. Quite keen on doing the same but adding Blackberries or Elderberries to a regular single can stout kit I wonder how you would do it ? Would you just soak the berries and use the water or would you need to juice them ? What quantity for 5...

    Bottle Tree

I've recently bought a Bottle Tree to speed up the bottling process.... Just wondering whether it should be sterilised each time I use it ? I've heard there's no need if using a 'non rise' sterilizer ? I will be using Camden Solution

Alcoholic Root Beer, Birch Beer and Dandelion and Burdock

Just wondering if anyone has made any of these ? I have a few recipes but they're mainly for soft drinks. I suppose you just let it ferment longer + maybe add more sugar to make it alcoholic ? It seems quite challenging to make a soft drink that doesn't explode. So better to let it ferment...

    Trying to Improve Bottling

I just bottled EDME IPA last night. Took about 2.5- 3hrs....(including prep and clear down time) Just wondering how long it takes for others ? My method was as follows.... 1. Move FV to high position (kitchen table on top of wooden crates) 2. Sterilise 20 bottles + rinse 3. Auto-sython into...

Producing Beer From just Dried Malt and Hops ?

Is it possible to produce a decent pint from Just dried malt extract and hops ? I mean all kits seem to contain a tin of liquid malt. Why not brew with 2 kg of spray malt (various shades) with some dried hop (powder / pellets etc.) ? Jazz

Barley Wine Finished Fermenting or not ?

Hi, I'm currently brewing my fourth brew (Young's Barley Wine). It's been just over three days fermenting and looks like it may have finished fermenting. I took a hydrometer reading today and it read 1.030 and tasted quite strong. I used 1kg of Munton's Beer Enhancer. After two days the CO2...

Tips for Elderberry and Damson Wine

I'm currently fermenting two DJ's of elderberry wine at he moment.... One is just elderberry the other was an elderberry and damson mix (with raisins). They've been fermenting for about 3 weeks now. So I thinking of bottling in another couple of weeks. The Damson mix looks like it could do...

Minimising Sediment In Bottle Conditioned Beers

Just started drinking my second brew (EDME Yorkshire Bitter). It's really nice but I find I have to pour the bottle in one movement (into a jug if sharing) and stop as soon as the sediment starts to appear in the neck of the bottle. So I get left with an inch of muddy beer in the bottle. It...

    Bottling Wine With Screw Tops

Just started fermenting some Elderberry Wine.... I know of people that use used screw tap bottles when bottling. Is this a good idea ? I mean would a used scew cap bottle give an adequate seal ? If not is there an inexpensive way of sealing it ? I know with corks you can wax seal the neck...

    EDME Yorkshire Bitter Just Bottled

Just bottled a batch of Yorkshire bitter last night. My fermentation Fermentation was a little quick (<2 days SG 1008), as the yeast may have been pitched at too high a temperature with not enough aeration. It did produce some froth though no bubbles in the airlock. I left it for five days...
