Hi People, quick question that I know all you clued in sorts will know....

My brewing bucket does not have a hole on the top for an airlock, do I need an airlock? If so I take it it's ok just to make a hole and put a bung and airlock in.

Cheers

Hi,

If it's a fermenting bucket, I wouldn't worry about not having an airlock. The lids don't make a perfect seal, so any excess gas is vented that way. Even if you fitted an airlock, it's unlikely you'd see an action through it as the easiest way for the gas to escape is via the lid seal.

If for any reason you choose to fit an airlock, you would be better using a grommet rather than a bung - look on eBay for airlock grommet.

If the bucket is the reasonably transparent white one, you will know fermentation is taking place as you will be able to see the krausen ring forming.
