A good way to distinguish your malt and hops is by doing smash brews.

I did have a taste of the krausen on my Gales Golden ale when I changed the cling film on top of the FV. It looked so much like devonshire clotted cream I thought I see what it tasted like. Needless to say, it didnt taste like clotted cream

It tasted bitter but not as much as I was expecting

When I used to buy crisp malt from charles faram it would be dated as being packed a week or 2 before but how long it ago it was in the field or how long it will be sitting at the homebrew supplier I have no idea.
