Getting a brew on tonight... Christmas stout (as that's when it'll be ready)
4kg MO
250g Crystal
250g biscuit
250g Chocolate
250g Oats
250g roasted barley
250g Flaked Barley
200g Wheat

55g Challenger 60mins
2 Star Anise because Christmas!

Off on holiday for a week on Friday will bottle when I get back.

Sorry no pics brew was done while I was alone with the kids and involved juggling brew with bedtime!

I don't tend to aroma hop a stout... porter yes, stout no.
Star Anise I used 3 with a 45min boil.
Smell was brilliant in boil that challenger bitter scent backed with aniseed...

Sorry to be a pain with questions. Just not made a stout yet and thinking of trying doing one for the winter months.

Looks like a 5 Gallon recipe to me, mate.

I like stout all year round, myself, and it is one of the few styles that is really quite good from a kit. Much enhanced by steeping Roast Barley and Chocolate Malt.

No problems... was used to get 29 to 30 litres wort from 40.5 litres total liquor... post boil I had 25 litres at 1050 (plus dead space wort)

Used a rest on the flakes plus 100g MO (1.5 litres water 30 mins at 40C) helps prevent stuck sparge (if it sticks inflate a balloon hold over closed tap and then open the tap this blows back through the mash... collect runnings and continue).

Mashed this with rest and remaining water for 2.5 litres per kilo

A simple stout is Wheeler's Genius
4kg MO
200g black
500g roast barley
500g flaked barley

Bitter hops...
60g northdown 9%
30g challenger 7.7%
(Or choose a bittering style and match bitterness)

Have made this and it is great.
Have trialled using a lot of grain styles as the dark beers i have most enjoyed recently used a lot of different grains.
