@ Joe1002, you can get it by the meter from heating/stove places. It's the stuff that connects your oil tank to your boiler, presuming you have OFCH. It comes covered in a white plastic that's too easy to get off. I paid £2 per meter. It's £30 for 10m in B&Q.

I don't know much about elements, but is it dangerous if the copper coil touches the element? Electric shock sort of danger?
 
I shouldn't think it would be dangerous, the resistance wire in the element is encased in a ceramic insulation from the external metal so there will be no electrical contact between the mains supply and the exterior of the element as this acts as the earth.
