The fact that 3 pint in the pub costs more than a bottle of value brand vodka in the supermarket just illustrates how asinine the government's alcohol duty policy is.

Happily homebrewing is still only done by a tiny minority - I say happily because if it ever becomes mainstream the tax man will want a far bigger bite of the cherry...

Yes I keep telling all my " friends " to p**s off to the pub.

Leave me to brew my beers to my satisfaction and to a nice price.

Eddie that's good news.

Personally I think that the beer tax should be structured differently.

The tax on live cask conditioned beer should be much lower.

This is after all part of our heritage, and a lower tax would support all those small breweries and pubs that are helping to preserve our heritage.

The tax on pasteurised fizz should be increased.

This would not only help to preserve our heritage but would also help our balance of payments & preserve jobs & help our exports.

I'm going to fire off a mail to my local MP

Cheers

It would be quite easy to structure something along the lines of any beer with more than 20 IBU's and fermented with an ale yeast means much lower duty.

Same with cider. Simply apply the duty to any cider made with something other than 100% freshly pressed apple juice.

Job done!
