No.2 son joined me for another brew day today. This one is destined for the Forum Brew and Swap, and I’ll enter it in LAB if I can work out what category it should go in.
Based on a Weyermann recipe

Vitals - OG 1.060, EBC 40, IBU 56. Expected FG 1.008

Water Ca 100, Mg 6, SO4 150, Cl 50

Fermentables
3.75kg Pale Ale
2.66kg Rye Malt
530g CaraBelge
380g CaraRye
230g Special W
80g Chocolate Rye

Multi-step Mash
15min 45C
20min 52C
30min 63C
10min 72C with 5 minute decoction
10min 78C

Hops
60min - 28g Columbus
5min - 14g Columbus/14g Chinook
0min - 28g Columbus/28g Chinook 15minute hopstand at 75C

Yeast
Fermoale AY-4

21L in the fermenter at a very healthy 1.060

21B has a sub-category for Rye IPA. I'm currently planning on entering mine into the Nationals assuming all goes well tomorrow! 🤞
The problem there is that I’m way above the upper limit for colour, this is a modern take on a historic recipe that doesn’t sit nicely in the guidelines. I’ll probably enter it as Red IPA.

I guess see how pronounced the rye character is and make a decision from there. The guidelines normally have a bit of leeway for interpretation.
