Runwell-Steve
Landlord.
I can't remember the last time I documented a brew day so here goes.
By the power of modern technology I am going to make beer and try and write it up as I go. There are a few pictures along the way.
So it's time for a brew.
First job is filling the HLT and get that heating up. The feed for it is straight out my combi boiler so it doesn't take too long to heat up. I've put 68 litres in there, I haven't really sorted a recipe yet but something very dark today so apart from a campden tablet no water treatment needed for my water.
HLT full up and warming nicely.
Some water in the boiler as well, about 15 litres or so. This will boil and then I will run it out of the tap while boiling which will clean the tap and pipe out of the boiler. I run this into the mash tun in a bit to pre heat it.
So, onto the recipe, as I thought it will be a dark thing, I don't have the right yeast for it so West Coast Ale it will have to be, it was that our saflager.
Right, I suppose I should get on and weigh out the grains.

Water running out of boiler to pre heat the Mash Tun.
-----
The obligatory Grain shots.
The Pale
And the rest all mixed up
Time to Mash in now.
Mash is on, temperature almost spot on, good enough for me.
Time for another cup of tea :)
-------
Hops are weighed out ready for the boil. Just first wort hops today.
First runnings going into the boiler. It's definitely going to be a dark one.
The full brewery in operation, boiler fired up, hops are in, fly sparging in progress, now just to monitor the water level in the mash tun for the next 30 minutes or so.
-------
Still running quite dark and that's the boiler nearly full.
--------
And we're boiling.
--------
Just chilling
I really need a bigger immersion chiller or to switch to plate chiller. This immersion chiller was designed for 5 gallons, not 10, and takes ages.
--------
Brewday is over, well apart from the dreaded cleaning up.
A good degree of success today, just over 40 litres in the fermenters, which is just perfect for filling 2 Cornelius kegs.
Both fermenters are now tucked away in the fridges to ferment at 18.5 degrees.
Efficiency was good as well even though I was using up a lot of very old grain. I make it 1.060, but I have never been very good at reading hydrometers.
Its black as coal.
Now for the washing up.
