I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian, but I am upset that most pigs are slaughtered by lowering into a pit of carbon dioxide, which causes them to choke to death. Anyone who has inhaled a lungful of CO2 will know how painful a death it will be. CO2 causes an immediate, involuntary exhalation and this is followed by a desperate need for air and the cycle repeats. I'd rather they were shot or beheaded. Why can't humans and animals be euthanased by hypoxia? This involves slowly lowering the available oxygen which leads to unconsciousness and death ina peaceful way.

You think thats bad. In the egg industry because male chicks are no good for either meat or eggs their thrown alive into a crusher - something akin to a wood chipper

What is wrong with that? It seems to be a very quick death. I think being squeamish is not a valid objection. What is the alternative? Chicknitas?

If you were to be executed, what method would you choose? I would choose whatever is quickest and most effective, certainly not gassing or lethal injection by a prison appointee, as in the US. A good hangman can take a man from the condemned cell and complete the deed within 15 seconds.

That said, I am against the death penalty.

I agree. I'd want it to be quick and effective. I still wouldnt want to get chucked in a wood chipper/crusher though

Im also against the death penalty (and wood chippers)

So, what method would you prefer? A wood chipper for me would need to be larger than the ones used for chicks. For humans, the wait would be worse than the deed.

If a violent inmate in a US prison kills other inmates or prison guards, I don't see any alternative to the ultimate sanction. If only to protect others.

Seeing as though noone in the world executes by woodchipper I dont think there is any info on how long it takes to die from being thrown into one. So it could be long and painful. So I wouldnt choose that way
The 15 seconds by hanging doesnt sound too bad although I thought it was instantaneous if the hangman did his job properly and snapped the neck?

Many are used in owl conservation to feed chicks. (i used to be involved back in the day)

Dead day-old chicks
The most common food items given to Barn Owls are dead day-old cockerels which are a by-product of the poultry industry. They are economically priced, readily available, convenient to use and provide a high protein, low fat diet, with good levels of vitamins and calcium. Chicks do contain yolk and can become rather messy, however, the routine de-yolking of chicks dramatically reduces the levels of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamins A and E and is not recommended.

Dead chicks (“culls”) can sometimes be obtained directly from hatcheries but it can be difficult to find one with surplus chicks available. Always ensure the chicks were gassed with carbon dioxide, not with chloroform (ether) or carbon tretrachloride. Also be careful with home freezing of fresh chicks; slow freezing can allow bacteria to reach dangerous levels.

High quality “blast frozen” chicks can be obtained from specialist animal feed companies, often in boxes of 200. Most pet shops that cater for reptile-keeping sell smaller quantities.

That makes more sense...

There are a lot of pub beers that are vegan these days.

But how many people are actually using animal products in homebrew?
only lactose once or twice in 5 years of brewing. Plus I have to point out I know a few vegetarians who are dog owners. What does the dog eat? - Also know a vegetarian who wears leather shoes. As with everything in life there are various shades of grey with everything and it's not for me to preach to others, albeit I've had others preach to me from what I can see is in my view a hypocritical point of view. Nethertheless, I try and do the least damage I can. Only buying free range eggs for example and not buying desserts with gelatine in them. etc. As humans the best we can do is damage the planet as little as possible, and how we do that is up to our own set of (or lack of) standards.

p.s. I apoloigize if this post is a bit heavy. I've just had a risky business 2 - so I'm already 3 farts to the wind. 😁

I guess that's a 'positive' use for them

Nitrogen would be better, in fact there was a chap in 'strylia posing as a brewery supplier selling nitrogen for euthanasia purposes but because you can use nitrogen in brewing appeared to have avoided sanctions. You don't get the gag type response from nitrogen and that makes the handing of liquid nitrogen even more dangerous than for the reasons you'd think. There have been science labs deaths because of this.

15 seconds to get the man from the cell to his death including the walk.

I loved the movie where Kevin Spacey's character was wrongly executed for murder in his efforts to oppose the death penalty.
