Yes it does become more concentrated, the longer you boil for the more concentrated it will become. You need to know your boil off rate as well as how much is left in your boiler after transferring the wort to the fermenter. Boil off rates will vary from setup to setup, it takes a bit of trial...
I wouldn't advise adding water after fermentation has started. I've tasted beer that has been diluted and it tasted just like that, diluted beer. The time to start looking at your gravity is prior to boil, together with the volume in the boil, that way you adjust your boil accordingly or add...
I tend to wait until about 60-70% attenuation, about 10 days for the last couple I did (though this will vary with the yeast, OG and conditions). You can do it earlier. I got some inspiration for the way I do it from Brulosophy. He recommends 50% attenuation before upping the temperature. The...
That looks ok. I think it's possibly hop residue. I regularly clean gunk off my fermenters that looks like that. My beer tastes ok (most of the time!). I doubt you've got an infection.
The SS Brewtech suggestion is to use a 1" tube at the bottom, the CIP barb at the top is 1/2". They also suggest opening the valves and not using the top clamp to prevent pressure building up. Here's an upload of the PDF:
It's the flow rate you need to look at. SS Brewtech do have some instructions on their site for constructing a CIP system with their spray ball. The use a 17 gpm pump. Assuming it is US gallons that is around 65 litres per minute. This is for cleaning a 1BBL unitank. After seeing the post above...
Do you use any bleach based cleaners? This could be a cause of the tcp like taste if they've not been fully rinsed off after you've used them. On the subject of Chlorine in the water, I occasionally smell in our water where we live, almost like a dose has been added to clear the pipes. I have...
Thanks. I've got a trolley too but the FV is in the garage. I have made a ramp but it is not to be trusted with a full Grainfather. I want to avoid carrying a full FV into the garage. I had seen an upgrade on Facebook but it was in Australia and I couldn't source the pump here.
One of Yonnys recipes at Copperkettle home brewing uses dried elderflower. It was based on a Badger Breweries beer that now uses Peach as the flavour. It was the first recipe I brewed on my grainfather. Very pleasant summer beer. It didn't use much but was very noticeable, it gave the beer a...
As the title says really. Has anyone upgraded the pump on their Grainfather. If so, what did you use and where did you source it from? I am planning on pumping directly into my fermenter in the brew fridge so that I don't have to carry a fermenter full of wort and don't think the standard pump...
