    Wilkos sale

Have Wilko stopped doing their own 2 can kits, online only a 1 can shows up for the Golden Ale which used to be a 2 can kit (maybe we just need to use two kits' cans?)

My first brew - storage question

I don't mind priming bottles individually but I've got a fairly well honed knack now. But, for what you're planning I can see no reason why you can't syphon the brew into the keg, add the priming solution and then fill as many bottles straight away from the keg. Cap the bottles seal the keg...

    Stc 1000

Looks like your wiring was spot on to me too. I notice the label on yours says 220ac so it's fine for 230v in the UK. I would also say you've just been unlucky. When you get the new one, just double check all the terminals are screwed down firm, just in case there was an arc, but I think you...

    Outdoor Brewing

If you fit forced extraction to a suitable level you can use these burners indoors, it's the same kind of requirement as large scale hotel kitchens etc. Ideally you'd have the extraction linked to the supply of gas to be uber safe.

Managed to take a photo too and upload it!

    1st fermentation time advice please

I like glass too, but I have a fair bit of storage space and a ready supply of free glass bottles so I've got loads. However I agree if you're a regular drinker then 60 will do it, 80 definitely. Leaving a brew in the FV for a month is fine, in fact a good thing generally to leave this long or...

    Kit Beer Loss?

40 bottles sounds about right from a kit. I tend to clean and sterilise 40 unless the trub looks very small in which case I go to 42-44 instead.

    Festival IPA underway

Managed to bottle it last night (13/5/15). So, this was in the FV for a grand total of five weeks (4 at 22c and 1 at 12c). It was done after 4 weeks (I had the same readings three nights in a row) but I left it for a further week and dropped the temp down to help clear it (12c). This means...

    bench cappers

This is mine and can't fault a thing on it - easily handles tricky Wychwood types as well!! http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk%2f&WD=capper&PN=Automatic_Bench_crown_capper.html%23a101331#a101331

Will do, yes the extract comes in plastic pouches (bags) like an uncle bens rice!! :)

    Festival IPA underway

Added the hops late on Saturday (18th) and left them to sink. Krausen still there but fermentation has died down a lot as the lid of the FV wasn't doming or hissing when pressed. I will now keep an eye to see if the hop pellets restarts fermentation, but by the look I'm on for bottling next...

    Fermenter fridge lives!

I think it's along the lines of turning a speed boat around and turning an oil tanker around. If you control (measure) the air temp you can make quick changes like a speed boat whereas measuring a liquid temperature means by the time you've seen a change required it will take some time to bring...

    Fermenter fridge lives!

Funnily enough I've just started a Festival IPA and they recommend 20-25c so I think it varies a fair bit, dependent on the yeast I suppose.

    Festival IPA underway

I asked for one of these kits for my birthday just before Xmas and have finally got it underway (had time, spare bottles and dwindling Twherry). I cleaned the FV, spoon, thermometer and hydrometer using my normal Soda crystal solution, rinsed a few times while scrubbing and then Videne solution...

    Bottles: Glass or PET?

I use brown glass. I have a large collection of Rekorderlig cider bottles (so nice and thick to reduce and danger of bombs). For no other reason I just think that glass bottles are the proper way to store and open. I use a stand capper so capping isn't a chore and I clean them with very very...

    Bottling

For anyone bottling a bottling wand is a must - it also gives the ideal head space without thinking about it.

    Digital Thermostat Plug

It's an interesting one, with the probes you can measure the brew temp, air temp or a control temp (glass of water in the same cupboard). But all the brewing guides/books/instructions talk about air temps. I have my probe hanging freely in the brew fridge towards the top but not at the top so...

    Fridge question

Get an STC-1000 a look for some guides on here (mine in fact!) for wiring it up. This can then turn the freezer on and off to cool things down and turn a bulb/aquarium heater/tube heater on to warm things up. The STC-1000 is set to your desired temp' and it will switch each on and off to...

    Fridge Fermenter Fan

I'm not convinced you need a fan (I don't have one) but, would recommend you fit a four-way strip on the heat side of the STC and then feed the cables from a fan and heater tube out of the fridge drain hole and plug them in with the four-way outside of the fridge. To power a PC fan, you just...
