Home Brew Competition - May 17

I thoroughly enjoyed this - i once read about homebrew tasting 'homebrewy' and i wonder if it was why my beers never matched the flavours/aromas i wanted. Having now tried four beers by three other homebrewers i realise that the disparity i find between my beer and shop beer is definitely down...

Home Brew Competition - May 17

I received indication that I had all the beers I was going to so announced I was doing this at the weekend. No one raised any objections at that point. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

Home Brew Competition - May 17

The wife and I sampled four bottles of SMaSH on Saturday. Without further ado the results are: 1st - @Dan125 - Galaxies Mildly Collide 2nd - @JFB - Kiwi or Won't He 3rd - @AJHutch - Orange SMaSH It was an interesting one and multiple sips were taken for all involved. I will not lie that Dan's...

Thanks guys. Knowing what kind of profile to expect gives me good pointers as to whether or not they're hitting the mark. BTW, not that i wasn't already excited about the beers but the recipes i've received contain some of my favourite ingredients!

That'd be the beers! Is it considered bad form to ask for the SMaSH ingredients from our competitors prior to sampling? If not then please PM them to me!

@ajhutch, bottle in my possession now. I've got two entries from @JFB also (no forum name attached but guessing from initials). So, @dan125, @ajhutch and @jfb have entries in. @jceg316 thanks for the update!

@grmski, @strange-steve, @alanmanley, @jfb, @wfr42, @ajhutch, @hoddy, @doctormick, @jceg316 - checking in on this one. I've got two parcels to collect from the PO so i'm guessing these are entries from some of you lot. If you're still yet to post i'd be grateful if you could do so as soon as is...

First bottle arrived from @dan125. Hoping to set up a quaffing evening on the 27th May so there is an arbitrary deadline set there.

    Recipe: RISky Business

I sense a yeast experiment coming on. Might split the batch, fire Belgian at one and English Ale at the other. Plans are afoot.

SMaSH to me means single hop, single malt. Unmalted adjuncts such as oats/wheat/rice husks etc. are fine in my opinion but any malted adjuncts (malted wheat etc.) are out.

    Co2 - Where from?

@AJT, that's brilliant but a quick call tells me they don't deliver to Dundee. They can courier but as the lassie said to me "It's ridiculous charges really". That said i'm through in Edinburgh in a few weeks so it might be possible to pick one up. Size is the other thing i'm not sure about...

    Recipe: RISky Business

@dad_of_jon, you don't happen to have a bottle of yours kicking around i could pinch off you for taste test? :D I'm interested in how 50g Madarina Bavaria balances what sounds like an overwhelmingly sweet profile - having completed a Belgian Golden Strong with 500g Candi Sugar i can attest to...

    Nelson Single Hop Pale

Honestly, i'd love to say it did but I was impatient and necked my lot pretty quickly. It was tangy and tart. Some bottles (somehow) got infections and they came out sour. I learned very quickly that that combo was not for me. My buddy has some bottles still in his shed ageing - more power to him.

    Recipe: RISky Business

After discussion with a number of sources (reddit homebrew forum and Buxton Brewers) i've had a blast at revising this. Buxton do absolutely minimal bittering with Co2 Extract so i'm going to nail it with Nugget then they said they only use Centennial as their flameout hop. So, without further...

    Nelson Single Hop Pale

Brewed a SMaSH DIPa with Golden Promise and Nelson Sauvin back in Nov 16. We... uh... massively overcooked the hop bill on it. 17L batch with 40g Bittering, 20g mid-boil, 30g flameout. I had an extra 90g handy from overspill so we did two dry hop injections of 40g and 50g. It was hoppy. It...

    Co2 - Where from?

There's also travel involved for that one. I do have a mate in Aberdeen who comes down here every so often but i'd rather not depend on him to get it for me. I've tried calling local places but no dice thus far - might have to ask the pub across the road where they get there supply and go from...
