Forum members summer gathering.....Brewing Buddies Bash

To stay on track with the thread, I would love to go if it was nearer but the trek from Scotland is too far for me. On the point of MM leaving I would like to know why! MM was a great guy and I definitely know he would have said bye bye to the forum and give a reason, He put lots of work in...

Sunday trading hours, should shops open for longer? [Poll]

It was because it was said that extra pay should be a condition of working Sunday but Cameron ruled that out. In Scotland if you work a Fri to Sunday shift in shops as part of your contract of normal working hours you get more money working on Sunday. In England if extended hours were passed...

Sunday trading hours, should shops open for longer? [Poll]

Just a reply to cover difference between England and Scotland. Here in Scotland Sunday hours are extended but workers are paid extra for doing this however this is only different to England because of it being part of a shift pattern (if it's a 38 hour week covering Sunday it's normal pay in...

    Ever tried Ginger Bug ?

I loved the Crabbies ginger wine at Christmas and wouldn't mind making a gallon batch of that to condition for 8 months ready for next Christmas. Don't know why I didn't think of it before seeing this thread.

New arrival 12" 30cm long temperature sensor

I agree. I've not got one but opening one up might invalidate the warranty. I would put a gamble on it not breaking down and solder the female jack directly to the board. I'm an engineer and did six years soldering from fine pitch quad ICs to through hole wires but regardless of my...

    Latest giveaway from Inkbird

I admit that I wish I had won but knew that being the 1st to post I wouldn't win but if I had won it would have been a lazy way to control my brew compartment that I'm building.

New arrival 12" 30cm long temperature sensor

The new one is supplied with a female socket on a lead. This is a method to modify the earlier models that have a short probe.

    Brewdog - DIYDog

Have you read all the Brewdog DIYDog release? I've read through all of it and while some look viable the ones that are totally unbelievable put others into doubt. The negativity is that people with no experience might pay good money buying ingredients in total faith of a well known brewers...

    Brewdog - DIYDog

If Google points a search for Brewdog DIYDog to this forum I doubt it will be a positive marketing trick. I bet everyone commenting on this thread has not gone out to buy a Brewdog beer and not tried a recipe that was released.

    Overheated my mash

Just a thought but would it be a good idea putting the grain in an oven at about 50 C while the mash water is heating up. It could reduce the temperature change to be minimal when adding to the water.

New arrival 12" 30cm long temperature sensor

A much tidier way to do that would be to use 10 cm of 3mm heat shrink tubing, cut wires and strip back outer by 3 cm. Cut 1 cm off one of the inner cables then strip back to expose 5 mm of wire. strip back to expose of the other wire then repeat the process for the connector cable. Slide the...

    Overheated my mash

Yes, I forgot to add that but totally agree with what geetee said. Only heat from the mash if you have a false bottom and can recirculate the wort and have temperature control so that the wort being recirculated is at mash temperature. Just putting the mash on a heat source without recirculation...

    Overheated my mash

My guess is because it dropped low first, more fermentable sugars will have been extracted and if the temperature ramped up quickly to get beyond 75 degrees C not many unfermentable sugars will be in there as enzyme reactions stop at 75 C. The only thing you will have a problem with is a dry...

    Corny Kegging Question

Yes. I use turbo clear in my beer, It doesn't totally get rid of all the yeast but after I syphon the beer into the keg I leave it in the cold for a few days (usually a week) then attach the co2 and draw off about 250 ml which has a lot of yeast; I then force carbonate it and leave it to...

    Brewdog - DIYDog

Yep, I didn't put any into a brew calculator but having made 20 litres of Belgian ale at a potential target of 7.5% abv using 7kg of grain and getting 1.070 OG at 85% mash efficiency. They must get very poor efficiency using double the grain I used.

Some of the recipes are beyond belief though, some are the equivalent of saying to make a lovely milky coffee use 500 ml of water a teaspoon of milk 3 tablespoons of sugar and 200 g of instant coffee.

    Brewdog - DIYDog

Yep, now I've had a good look some recipes look very strange. I'm thinking it could be every experiment including ones that were bad. I can't believe there are so many brews and I've never tried one but this marketing release won't fool me to go out and try the brews. I wish Green King would...

Yep, I know some people only come here now and then and some see stuff elsewhere that's interesting then just post without looking what's already here. Not to knock it because it good to share but it would be good to either subscribe to sub forums to see updates or check the forum before posting.

    First Grainfather brew

Just the same as me then. I do that to sterilise the pipe before turning the cold water on and pipe in the FV. I did the same putting a finished brew outside to try clear it but it didn't change after 2 days. That was probably because of a big mistake because I noticed big clumps in the FV after...
