Beerworks Presidents Sierra American Pale Ale

How are you getting on? I've done a Beerworks Rocket IPA and just put on their Spire IPA today, so I'm interested in how yours is doing.

1st go at the all grain

That's because he's heard you talk about "adding body" to the beer.

    Used Grain and Malt

I've put some on the compost heap, and despite the fact that the local pheasants lurk there, they've ignored it and hang round under the bird feeders.

My Personal Rant About BrewDog PLC

It's a bit like the Silicon Valley computer "hobbyists" wearing T shirts and trainers to disguise the fact that they've got five factories in China churning out the stuff to 80 countries.

    Disaster and redemption

As I'm swigging one as I type (well, I have put the glass down for a second) I'll do my best. I've been using the extract kits, so there's no boil involved. Dry hopping is done on the 5th day in the fv, and just consists of adding boiling water to the hops provided, and dropping them into the...

    Disaster and redemption

I'd brewed up a Guinea's Stout kit from LoveBrewing, and kegged it on day 11 and put the keg in a water bath for the carbonation. After about 36 hours the bath water was full of beer and the keg was floating. The bath temperature was high, so I switched off the immersion heater to slow/stop...

Beerworks Presidents Sierra American Pale Ale

There seem to be lots of ways of adding hops. With the above kits from LoveBrewing, I crumble the hops into a jug as they come out of the packet. This is quicker than using a knife and the packet makes sure that my grubby mitts don't come into contact with the hops. I add the boiling water...

Stout FG 1018 3 times in a row

I've just kegged some stout today at 1018. I had a taste from the hydrometer vessel, and it didn't taste particularly sweet. In fact it tasted pretty good.

    Will this grain mill do?

Just be careful you don't end up milling chipboard by mistake.

No Bubbles coming though Air lock

Judging by the photo, the fermentation is well under way, so I wouldn't worry about the lack of bubbles through the airlock.

    Keeping the mash temperature up

This may be a stupid question, but isn't it possible to keep the mash temperature at 70% or so by maintaining gentle heat in something like an Ace boiler. Although less energy efficient, it would save a lot of messing around covering the mash with insulating material. Have I missed something...

    Ace electric boilers?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there seem to be two Ace boilers which are eminently suitable for home brewing. One is about £150 and comes with an inner mesh bag for easy BIAB and the other is over £300 and is billed as a microbrewery and has extra bells and whistles for stirring etc. To...

    Milling grain without a mill

Last heard of a punishment in a prison in Arizona in 1922. Subsequently banned by the Supreme Court as "cruel and unusual."
