Thanks! I just finished replacing the broken switch with one of these: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B00IIE1B6W/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 It was of exactly the same size as the original and was a completely painless, 5-minute job. Bought a couple of extras for the future...

I sent hifi-tower an email sunday, got a response first thing monday. They offered a 30 gbp partial refund, or the option of shipping the unit back to them for repair (at their expense). Am going to accept partial refund, repair the switch myself. They gave assurance last time that this option...

Thanks for the info! I'm considering making an order for the smartpid. The functionality I really want is timed start... I brew in the morning, try to mash in and then make kids breakfast. Would be nice if it was hot when I woke up. If I understand correctly, you started modding yours before...

So far as I can tell, hifi-tower effectively is klarstein... both are subsidiaries of the same umbrella company. In any case, they may not sell via ebay any longer, but they are still around. https://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/ I just emailed them to see how if they'll replace it. It's a bit absurd...

My switch fried during today's morning brew. I think mgkpancake and I are being punished as early adopters... I've noticed that when I exchanged my first unit for a replacement (after the element cracked) the electrics changed rather substantially. But, unfortunately, the switch that had failed...

    ACE Microbrewery

Biggest batch yet... 22.5 litres real volume (sparge) plus 20 litres mash volume (to 20 litre mark on kettle). So probably about 40 litres pre-boil volume? I'm still not sure what 20 litres marked on kettle is in actual litres. Hot break was a little stressful, but only for a couple of minutes. :)

I've got another five or so batches on the replacement unit without trouble. It remains very nice to use...

Ouch. I'm really sorry to see it. Both because it put you out, and it means there are multiple points of failure on this thing... I'm worried I should have taken the refund.

Hi MP, Thanks for this info, apologies for not having got back to you earlier. In the end I returned the whole unit to hifitrading at their Berlin location. They have been incredibly easy to deal with. They rapidly accepted the return request and paid for the return shipping in full. I...

Thanks for this response, and thanks even more for the detailed video! That's a lot of work to produce, and it helps me out tremendously. The retailer I bought from (hi fi tower) offered me a partial refund of 60 pounds, or suggested that I return the unit to them for replacement. The trouble...

It's good advice, thanks. I'm prone to try and fix it myself - I'm betting returning it to retailer will cost more for shipping than buying a replacement burner - but it is under warranty, and I'll kick myself if it's a bigger problem and I void the warranty. I have enough beer to last a...

I've had one of these units (klarstein branded, but identical to the ace) since mid-january. Have brewed about 8 times on it. On brew yesterday, though, I seem to have lost half the burner element. Had just ramped up to boil after mash and sparge... was going fine, then kitchen power breaker...

You respond like I'm telling you that jet fuel can't melt steel beams. ;) These are cosmetically-very-similar, small-market-share items... wouldn't surprise me if they were produced in the same factory. Wouldn't surprise me either if this wasn't the case. Thus the request for someone to...

The fact that this unit has exactly the same internal breaker setting as the grainfather suggests that the factory producing these units also produces at least the grainfather burner... Does anyone have access to both, just to take a look and see if they are the same? The ace unit is pretty...

I've done two brews on the klarstein mundschenk. In the first run, I heated strike water to target temperature and then doughed in... so then had to heat water back up to target temperature after it fell ~4 degrees. I set the element to heat the mash at 2500 watts (this is the mistake, I...

You just made my day. This explains why it cut out one time, not the other... the nightmare brew I had, with it cutting out repeatedly, the burner was black at the end and had to be scrubbed with steel wool. If that's the problem then the brewer is working as designed, not failing for some...

Did the same thing... reducing the wattage 100 by 100 and found that it didn't trip the breaker at exactly 1700 too... And also spent a good chunk of time on the floor. But has subsequently worked fine twice, done full brew routine without any problems, mashing at 800 watts and boiling at...

I took it off with vinegar, and eventually steel scrub pad and elbow grease (just a little, wasn't that hard). There's no evidence of the scrubbing on the stainless, no scratches or anything.

Yes, it can be run on lower wattage setting. I'm not entirely sure what this does, though... I think that it just results in the burner cycling through on/off periods with longer off periods, rather than that the actual temperature of the burner becomes lower. But not sure of this. When the...
