    Trying a Kveik

I got a packet of Lallemand Voss kveik yeast and I have no idea what to do with it, nor if I can even push up my fermentation temp that high.... But if I do I was planning something like this: 20l boil / 16l batch Pilsner 3.25kg approx 70% Oats 500g 10% Wheat 500g 10% Flaked barley 250% 5%...

    New saison recipe

Hi there, I have a couple of packets of Belle Saison yeast to use up so was going to use one on a new saison recipe. My typical saison grain bill is Pilsner (70%ish), Munich (15%), Wheat (10%), caramunich II (5%) and hopped with Sladek or Saaz at 60 and 15mins. However I have some other...

    Sanitation and setup crisis

Thanks! I do always sterilise the FV before adding the wort to it, but what I don't do as often is take it all apart and individually do the taps etc, I usually just run the solution through the tap for a couple of minutes. I use chemipro oxi right now. I did look at caustic before but the...

    Sanitation and setup crisis

Yeah I always rinse after, both for equipment and bottles. But the last couple of batches the residue has come on after rinsing? It is really weird, never seen it before. And the Wit I brewed had it and is fine. Thats one reason I am scratching my head!

    Sanitation and setup crisis

Thanks for the reply! Just to clarify I don't have the pump switched on during the boil, presumably there is some wort in the tube but it doesn't flow through the whole system? I know the cellar is not ideal but I don't have many alternatives unfortunately. :-( It didn't seem to be a problem...

    Sanitation and setup crisis

Hi there, After about 60 brews over 6 years or so I am starting to have a crisis of confidence. In my first 55 brews I had like 3 which didn't come out well, and one of them I am sure was due to poor storage of the yeast during the height of summer. However in the past 5 or 6 brews I have...

All-In-One Royal Catering system first go

Hi there, Yesterday I brewed with my new 30l Royal Catering AIO for the first time. It looks identical to the Klarstein system and some others re-badged. Just for some background - I had a previous setup of a Klarstein boiler and homemade cooler box mash tun which served me well for around 50...

    AIO system

Hmm, I like your thinking. Maybe I can heat more to start with them drain into my existing boiler. Then use the small element to bring it back to temp. At the same the AIO would be on a low current so it might not be much more than my first ever setup which was a homebuilt bucket boiler with two...

    AIO system

Realised I should have said I am in Prague so we have slightly different electrics. Our cooker is wired in and anyway is two stories up as I brew in the cellar. I'll have to think it through.

    AIO system

Thanks for all the replies and apologies for the late follow up. So I still need to keep my existing boiler alive for heating sparge water. Anyone had experience of running both of these off the same circuit?

    Advice on NEIPA colour

Thanks for the replies. At least it will save me labelling this on! My only idea was oxidisation but Only reason I had a doubt over it is that the taste hadn't changed as much as the appearance. I've had load of oxidised beers in the past when I haven't got round to finishing the batch and you...

    Advice on NEIPA colour

Hi there, I brewed a NEIPA recently that I was really happy with from brewing to fermenting to bottling. I used my usual water adjustments, more or less typical neipa grain bill. Generous hopping of Strata, Sabro and Talus and for the first time used lactose late in the boil. I also used MJ...

    AIO system

Hi there, I know I've asked this before but I still don't fully understand and my boiler has taken a further turn for the worse today. I currently have a klarstein boiler and a cooler box mash tun. I heat the mashing water, do the mash then heat the sparge water and sparge into a bucket before...

    Belgian Dubbel recipe

Oh, one more question for @Cheshire Cat - when I put your recipe into Brewfather it was coming out much darker than the recommended range, somewhere up around 50. just wanted to check that is expected and I didn't mess it up? Seems to be the dark candi causing it.

    Belgian Dubbel recipe

I have found a supplier for Special X here in the Czech Republic. It does say it is for use in Belgian Abbey and Trappist beers but I have never heard of it so not sure if it is a good substitute or not.

    Belgian Dubbel recipe

Cool, thanks for all the replies so far! OK, I'll try to get it closer to the GH recipe. I think I will stick with my Saaz/Sladek hops though as I need to use them and I'm not sure there will be a big difference given its just two charges and no post boil additions? I can definitely get the...

    Belgian Dubbel recipe

Hi there, I am planning on brewing a version of the Greg Hughes Belgian Dubbel recipe. His recipe has Pilsner, Special B and Caramunich I malt and light candi. Looking at what I have available and what I can get I was thinking about dropping the Special B and subbing Caramunich II and dark...

    IPL type pilsner

Had a delicious "Bohemian" pilsner last year in Greece and am trying to put a tribute recipe together. I think that beer used Citra but I have Ekuanot that I want to use. I've got this so far: I plan a 19L boil to end up with a 14L batch. aiming for 1.048 OG, 4.3%. 56ibu (little high I...
