    Sake Recipe

My Grandma gave me this recipe from when she used to make wines. My Grandad really got a taste for the stuff when he was back in Korea :D --- INGREDIENTS --- - 1.3kg (3lb) Long Grain Rice - 1.3kg (3lb) Granulated Sugar (Sucrose) - 3.4l (6pts) Lukewarm Water - 450g (1lb) Raisins - 1/2 cup...

    Fittings - Couplers and things

Compressions are a lot more pleasant to use than solder bits, & I've never known one leak :thumb: I know they're a lot more expensive than solder bits, but they have the luxury of being able to disassemble without de-soldering, if you ever want to change the design or repair .etc. It doesn't...

    Boiler Questions

Thanks dor the advice everyone :) I think I'll go on the search for a stockpot or two ( eBay, boot-sales, freecycle. Etc) Wiring up a kettle element's not hard, so I should be OK with that :D I'll do all of the brewing in our barn. It's got running water & drains, as well as power. I'll have...

    Boiler Questions

Hi all, I have a few questions regarding All-Grain boilers. It's been a little project for the college holidays, to convert to AG brewing, & so far I've built the mash-tun. 1) I was wondering if a home-made boiler from a FV & a kettle element, would be more cost-effective than a Burco style...

New Thermos coolbox conversion - should I do a howto?

Ordered a box & a tap seperately yesterday dinnertime, & they both arrived this morning. The box is an unbranded 24L, for £9.99 off Ebay. I've heard cheap boxes have insulation problems, but we have plenty of loft insulation lying around, so I'll fashion some sort of jacket  Even...

    Is is ready?

Hmmm, that's a bit lower than what I got, I think mine turned out at about 5%. (Then again, the Cooper's instructions tell you to add 0.5% to the FG to account for the priming sugar). If you haven't added the 0.5%, then it should be around 3.5%, & Carlsberg's around that I believe :) It's...

New Thermos coolbox conversion - should I do a howto?

I'm planning on making a mash tun in the near future, so I could do with some more advice :thumb: Currently shopping around for a cool box, never thought they'd be so expensive :(, so I think I'll try & grab one second hand.

    temp of beer in fv

In the winter, before I got a heater, my brews were around 16C, & they ended up with a slightly low final gravity, so they turned out weaker than hoped. After I got a heater, all my brews were bang on FG. It's a bit too warm in my shed at the moment. It gets like a sauna in there & can be 35C...

First brew - Coopers lager kit

Coopers Lager was my second kit. I din't really know what I was doing, & used Demerara sugar (Left over after my Wherry). I thought it would be ruined, but it turned out a cracking drink (The Demerara gave it a crisp taste, although slightly bitter, but I'd use brewing sugar next time) It went...

conversation im sure we have all had with work mates

Similar thing at college. Sadly they don't seem to appreciate beer whatsoever, they all guzzle pear cider & vodka. They were impressed with my wine though :D

    Those damn hobgoblin bottles.

It's the same with the Bacchus Kriek bottles. The tops are far too big for normal caps. So I've decided to save them & use corks, to give a vintage style look for some of my special brews

    New and improved wherry

Probably a better thing to do :D Mine got stuck at 1018 degrees, & just couldn't shift it, even after another week of fermenting near the fire. (I've heard Wherry's notorious for sticking). Still a cracking pint from the keg though, you wouldn't complain if you got that in a pub. :drink:

    Woodforde's Wherry ?

Hi all, I've got the Wherry on the brew, & so far it's not being too clever. It's been 9 days so far on the primary fermentation. All went well until sunday, when it's gravity got to 1019, & it's only dropped to 1018 today. So it hasn't changed gravity in 4 days. :( At first it may have been...

    Novice Needing Advice On Heater

I've had a browse on Ebay, but does the wattage matter on the aquarium heater? It's confusing me a bit, so many to choose from :) If the heater is sterilized, would it be fine just to give it direct contact with the beer? Cheers, -J

    Novice Needing Advice On Heater

Hi everyone, I'm currently on the 5th day of my first brew (Woodforde's Wherry Bitter), & my daily temperature readings are around 16-17deg (Gravity 1018 as of today). I've been told this is a bit cold (By a brewery runner), so was contemplating getting some sort of heater for my next batch...
