    Bleach in the wort

Thanks BigCol, Good advice. I am away for a couple of days and so will leave it to its own devices for a bit longer. Brewhouse

    AG#2

Hi Matt, Well done on getting a few successful brews under your belt. Remember that, just because the beer is carbonated, it doesn't necessarily mean it is ready. The yeast will go on tidying up any off flavours for some time. This is one of the disadvantages of small batches - the beer is...

    Bleach in the wort

Ok guys, I have just made a really stupid schoolboy error. I had a brew day last weekend. As the FVs were going into the brew fridge I realised that I was out of Starsan and so used a really weak solution of bleach to fill the bubblers. It was probably diluted to 1/500. I don't really know...

What a difference 1C makes to fermentation.

Wort temp. I am guessing both temps will equalise shortly, but surprised how different the starts have been

What a difference 1C makes to fermentation.

I just thought I would make a comment about the difference I have seen this weekend in my latest brew. I did a 36L batch of Dry Irish Stout using Wyeast 1084 Irish Ale Yeast. The batch went into 2 FVs with a smack pack in each. Both in the brew fridge, one on top of the other. The FV at the...

    Bottles

One thing I will say about Boddingtons - The beer is **** but they did do some good adverts. (By eck lass, you smell gorgeous)

    Nitrogen Pour

Thanks Peebee, You know what it like with this hobby - always tempted by another curiosity! (In fact, any excuse to sneak another bit of kit into the brewhouse). I live in a very hard water area and my stouts are generally very good. Our local village pub was brought back from the brink by the...

    Nitrogen Pour

Thanks Simon, Yes it is actually a tank of mixed gas I have, not just nitrogen. I know I have to do the using carbing with CO2 but am not sure how to go about the final delivery.

    Improve my mash tun

    I love this idea.

    Nitrogen Pour

The next brew on the agenda is a dry Irish Stout and I am keen to try for that smooth creamy Guiness head. I have a bottle of nitrogen but have not yet bought the regulator or anything else. Are there any Stoutheads out there that can give me some advice on setup?

Flat beer when using wilko swingtop bottles

It could be a bit of debris caught in the seal that gets flushed out next time you use.

Airlock activity after taking DM reading

Hi BigCol, what do you use to get your RO water? I bought a cheapo system for about £50 and it takes ages to get anything. I haven't used it for a year but seem to remember I ended up with about 10L of RO water after 4-5 hours, maybe even longer. I gave up in the end.

Airlock activity after taking DM reading

As with all hobbies, when you are new to home brew there is a lot to learn and some of it seems very complicated. Two of the the most important things are hygiene and PATIENCE. There is probably not a single person on this forum who has not prodded, poked, measured, sniffed, tasted when they...

HELP! (again!) Too much priming sugar?!

Hi Babs, ditto foxbat. You should be fine.

What bottles did you use Babs? PET, Glass, Swing Top or Crown?

Modifying PBs to use with 6kg CO2 tank

I thought this may be of interest to anyone who has recently moved over to Cornies but still has some old PBs. I moved over because I was so fed up of buying the Hambleton Bard thing or the tiny CO2 cartridges. Just before sticking the PBs on eBay I found these...

    Conditioning in Brew Fridge

A few weeks ago I did a 46l batch of English IPA (Greg Hughes P131). Having hit all the numbers on the brew day I decided I would finish off properly and condition for 4 weeks at 12C as suggested in the recipe. The only way I can do this is to get it back in the brew fridge. In the past, I have...

    Keg won’t pour

What about giving it a bit of a shake to remove debris from the end of the dip tube and then storing it back at an angle so that the debris resettles away from the tube?

    S-04 vs US-05

Thanks guys, I'll go with that, and try and stay sober enough to the end of the brew day should I ever repeat this!
