    AG #1 Deuchars

*Edited the title* Doing the Deuchars recipe from GW book, fingers crossed :P Morning folks, it's been a while since I've brewed ( over year ) but today is AG #1 :) The only thing I forgot to order up was Campden tablets but I just had a look in my box of bits and found some, only thing...

    steam extraction

As title really, what do people do to get rid of the steam while boiling ? I'll be doing my brews in a brick shed so will have no windows just a single door. I can't find a cheap chimney extractor hood which would probalbly be the easiest option. I was thinking on fitting a kitchen extractor...

What tubing for 15mm pipe ?

I'll be needing some tubing to put on to my 15mm copper pipe attached to my mash tun ball valve. What size will do the job ? Also will simple syphon stuff do the job as it'll only be at 60ish C ?

    Kettle element - slight leak

I fitted my first kettle element to my bucket last night, not boiled any water yet though ! There is the smallest of leaks at the gasket, more of a weep really. Is it ok just to put a smear of silicone round the outside of the gasket ?

    Finding "value" kettles

Oh the joy of finding one, I was like a treasure hunt. I don't have any of the big retailers where I live so when i was away at the weekend one of my main things to do was get a couple of kettles for building my boiler. To start with Argos online had none in stock and Tescos online no longer...

    Thermometer

I've been using a Richies spirit thermometer since i started my kits 3 or 4 months ago. Last week I bought a digital proble thermometer, it turns out my spirit one is reading 5c lower than it should. :? I've said before that my brews aint been great, drinkable but not great ( could high tems...

    Asda cool box

I bought one of these at the weekend for £8 thinking I wouldn't be losing too much if it wasn't very good. Well I tried it last night, it lost 10 degrees in just over an hour ! I know I could cover it with blankets and stuff but I'm really limited for space at the moment and having a pile of...

Wort chiller and hop strainer - cost of copper !

I'm trying to get together my gear for my first go at an extract brew. ( going by the price of dsm it'll be ag soon enough i think ) 10mm copper pipe is around £60 for 25m. I know I dont need that much but it's still over £2 per m. Hop and Grape do their own chiller for £35 plus there's no...

    Using PET bottles ?

Are they ok for use with wine ? Knowing the speed that the wife goes through a batch of WOW or even a kit I don't think it'll be too long in the bottle anyway ! :P

    Quick question...Beaverdale kit

The instruactions say... It doesn't say to rack the wine before adding the stabiliser or finings. Should I follw the instructions or rack before I add the stabiliser ?

How long can I leave when batch primed ?

I've had a brew on the go for the last 2 weeks. Aussie lager and LME using saflager @ 10-14c....ish. The gravity dropped maybe .001 in the last week so tonight I batch primed it ready for bottling tomorrow. I checked it just now, 3 hours later and the fv lid was really domed and when I released...

5l water bottles ok to use as dj's ?

As title, obviously I'd need to drill a suitable hole in the cap for a bung.

    Clearing wine ?

Hi, I made up a 30 bottle kit of Solomon Grundy Pinot Grigio. Followed the instructions, leaving a few extra days just incase. The wine was in a fv so it's hard to see if it was clear or not and as this was my first wine I wasn't exactly sure how it was supposed to look. I went to...

My first brew tastes, well watery !

My first ever brew was a Coopers Aussie lager. It was made with 500g light spray malt and 500g brewing sugar. 1040-1008 iirc. Primed with 7/8g in litre bottles. I had my first taste 3 weeks ago after about 10 days in the bottle, it had slight apple/pear taste/aroma and had a slight bitter...

Batch priming for the first time

Hi folks. Been reading the forum for a few weeks, time for my first question ! :wha: I'm on my 3rd brew at the moment. Coopers Aussie lager has been in the garage for about 2 weeks and a batch of Geordie lager sitting by the fire keeping warm. :) I'm now ready to bottle some Coopers Aussie...
