    Pitching on to trub

I have done this on occasion too, just take a good scoop of the old trub set it to one side. Clean out the fermenter etc, get the brew in and then re pitch the old trub. Works well :thumb: I think I read somewhere that you can only recycle the trub like this for about half a dozen brews as the...

    Red Shiraz, premium kit

Usually a beer maker but got given a year out of date premium 5 gallon wine kit. As it was free thought I might at well give it a go .. Got it into a fermenter pretty late Sunday night. Was a little concerned as it was a bit out of date that it might not kick off but it's going like the...

    BIAB vs Conventional AG Method

BIAB is AG ! Just an alternate method requiring less equipment / initial outlay compared to a traditional 3 vessel setup. Capable of producing just as good results born out by blind tasting tests. I don't vew BIAB as a stepping stone on the way to 3 vessel systems. They're both All Grain and...

    Corny kegs for £34.95

My three arrived today... Just on a visual inspection they seem pretty good ..no major dings or nasties ... a few labels that need a soak to remove and a good overall wash they'll be fine.

    Racking to 2nd FV

I personaly think there is more risk of introducing a possible infection by racking to a secondary than any benefit gained. Just leave it in the primary and it will clear. Any "sitting on the trub" off tastes would take many weeks if not months to occour.

    Fermenting bucket leaking air?

It will be fine, a lot of people don't even use an air lock and just leave the lid slighly loose. People read too much into air lock bubbles. So dont worry !

where to get a bag to use for BiAB

I have used one of these for dozens of brews, has stood up well ! http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004548ABS/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 It pretty big, can get a whole 5 gallon grain load in it but maybe not as big as is ideal so I lift it in and out a few times and generally swish it about a bit...

    Biab

Maybe cooker dependant as I use a 50 Litre pot on my 4 ring gas gooker and 2 burners get a really good boil going. Worth testing how a cooker performs before spending out on elements or burners etc ..

    Biab

50 Litre... you need enough size to hold the full brew water + all the water that will boil off + all the water the grain will absorb + enough space to get all the grain in as well ! A common mistake is underestimating just how big a pot you will actually need to do full length BIAB properly

Lovely first brew gone from clear to cloudy in two days

Chuck the cap seal into a jug of 'just off the boil' water for a few mins and it will lose any deformaty from previous use and soften. When putting the cap on smear the seal lightly in vaseline. Screw the cap down till it's only just starting to feel some resistance then nip it up 1/6th of a...

    camp coffee question

Camp coffee tastes pretty nasty as it isn't just coffee ... it's a syrup blend of chicory and coffee. Chicory was used in some coffee's as a cheap substitute for real coffee... and tastes it !

    What causes the homebrew twang?

The main two culprits are insufficient time allowed for both brewing and conditioning plus too high and or unstable brewing temps imo. Sort those two and your on your way to decent tasting pint.

Extract to BIAB then all grain

+1 on BIAB is All Grain ! Agree on 50 litre pot as you need to allow enough water for the brew length plus the amount absorbed by the grain plus the amount boiled off plus get all the grain in there as well :drink:Also a 50 litre pot will minimise any boil over risks.

    BIAB Volumes

I find I use about 30~31 litres to cover for grain absorbtion and boil off. A 50 litre pot works out fine allowing enough headroom (30 litres plus the grains volume !) and minimising boil over risks. You can and it's called Maxi BIAB as mentioned, although personally I havn't tried it.
