    Youngs bitter brew query

No problem. Funnily enough it's fairly difficult to find a lot of info about how to use kegs that aren't cornelius ones. Just because the valve is there you don't have to use it, experience is the best way to find these things out :) Hope it tastes good! How long are you leaving it to mature?

    First brew worries.

Just a small hint re the undissolved wort/sugar, as this was stuff I had to get used to when I was new: Most kit instructions just tell you to put the contents straight in your fermenter. It's far better to get yourself a big cooking pot and mix it up with about 6 pints of boiling water, stir...

    Youngs bitter brew query

Yey :) On the subject of the kegs, I use one and I have both tops. You shouldn't have to RELEASE pressure, that valve is there to inject CO2 when the beer in the keg isn't producing enough of its own. This means a vaccum forms and big bubble of air gets sucked in through the tap instead of beer...

    first brew

Fatbelly, Depends, it varies batch to batch and depends on if you brewed from a kit or AG as well. As a rule of thumb the longer the better, but by 4 weeks it should definitely be drinkable. When your drinking the stuff the clearer the better, if it's cloudy it hasn't had long enough and you...

    first brew

The head ache's probably come from the yeast still present in the beer, especially if it was packaged dehydrated stuff. Be patient, let it clear out completely and mature a bit. Trust me, you'll enjoy it a lot more ;)

    Hi from Nottingham

Definitely up for that, although like I said it won't be 'til the new year. Out of those Organ Grinder is a particular favourite, I'm in New Basford right now so the Canalhouse is a bit of a trek. Do you know the Lion in New Basford?

    Hi from Nottingham

Thanks a lot :) I've only got one more week of term so I'll disappear until January, but I've joined the group and I'm up for coming along at some point. Whereabouts do you usually meet up? Josh

    Using top-worker for first time...

Cheers, I'll check that out. Already have this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brew-Your-Briti ... 411&sr=1-1, which covers the basics well and tells me all about starter cultures etc... I suppose as I'm just starting out with this stuff the best plan would be to fill several containers so I have...

    Using top-worker for first time...

Ah, so it's an optional thing then? That answers some questions, impression I got was that it HAD to be done. On the subject of skimming, do you just take yeast off, store in sterilised jars and stick in the fridge until your ready to make up a starter? How long does the yeast keep in that...

    Using top-worker for first time...

Hi there, Sorry if this has already been covered anywhere, I had a bit of a look round but couldn't find an answer: I'm using a top-working yeast (donated by a micro-brewery) for the first time... obviously this forms the protective head on top of the liquor during fermentation. My question...

    Hi from Nottingham

Hello all, As the subject line says I'm in Nottingham MOST of the time, I'm actually a student so come Christmas/Summers etc I'm back in the Peak District, but all the brewing happens in Notts. I've been home brewing for about 3 years now, starting out originally because it was far cheaper...
