    Bottled beer life span.

Hi, I have some beer that has been bottled for many months. Several years ago I recall breweries having to throw away thousands of gallons of beer that were thought to be "past their sell by date" as a result of industrial strikes. I am wondering then if my bottles may in fact be heading for...

Have I used the wrong water?

Hi, I have been using Tesco's 5 litre Ashbeck still water for my kit brews but just recently they announced that they no longer stock the 5 litre containers so I had to buy their 2litre bottles instead. I inadvertantly used 20 odd litres of their sparkling water instead of still water to start a...

    Sediment on the move.

Hi gang, Having a little trouble with pouring from bottle to jug. Uusing a kit yeast that comes with the tin I was losing about a quarter of a pint by way of the sediment or trub when coming to the end of a pour. Thinking it may have been because I was using a basic yeast I started using...

    Bottle washers.

Was wondering if anyone knows how to come by the collar washers shown in the 'pic. They were used on the two pint Bulmer's cider bottles that are no longer used. I have about 4o bottles but unfortunately the only thing that ever needs replacing are the washers.

    How much hops?

Hi, I've decided to try giving my Geordie bitter a hoppy taste by adding some dry leaf hops. The wort has been in a primary for a week now, and if fermentation is nearly over after ten days I was planning to add the hops to a secondary FV. My question is, how much hops to use from the 50gm...

    Tesco prices up.

Ordered 40 pint tins of Geordie bitter online last month, price £8/50 per tin. Today £11/50. Also 1kg Youngs beer enhancer packets then £3/25 today £5/00. Perhaps back to the online LHBS's next time. :hmm:

    Bottle washers.

There are forum members on here who use the old pint/quart cider bottles with screw top caps as shown below. The red washers however eventually require replacing and my local home brew shop used to stock these. Unfortunately they no longer do so and I'm having a struggle to find an alternative...

    No priming sugar.

Hi fellas, A couple of months ago when bottling I was called away and several bottles slipped into the system minus priming sugar. They taste OK and will not be thrown away, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to restore a bit of life to the bottles. Any advice appreciated.

    Scum removal.

In J Berry's book Home Brewed beer and Stouts he recommends the removal of the scum which forms at the top in the FV during the earlier part of the fermentation, because he states, if left the beer can become 'yeast bitten'. Anyone else have any thought on this? It does in fact mess up the...

    Bulmer's cider bottle washers.

Have approximately 50 old style Bulmer's cider bottles and need to replace the red stopper washers shown below. My own LHBC no longer supplies them. Anyone know where these can be obtained? Grateful for any advice.

    Bulmer's cider bottle washers.

Many forum members own old cider bottles which they use for bottling their beer. I've had mine for 30 years or more and they and their black stoppers last forever, but unfortunately the red washers (shown) don't and my LHBS no longer supplies them. I'm wondering if anyone knows of where these...

    Yeast choice

Just picked up a couple of tins of Geordie bitter from Morrisons and have been warned not to use the supplied yeast, due to shelf life 'probs etc, and advised to buy locally or online. Can anyone give me the name of a general purpose yeast that would suit? All advice appreciated.

    High SG.

Hi, After experiencing a bad taste from my last kit brew which I think was a result of chlorinated water, I learnt that I had 2 options to overcome the problem which was adding half a Campden tablet to the water or using mineral water. I opted for the latter. Using a tin of Geordie bitter...
