    Cask breather troubleshooting

Yeah, it’s a pain to open and close the CO2 whenever I want to pull a pint in my setup but it’s also better than emptying a full tank in a day or two. I was thinking about using the cask breather to limit oxygen uptake during cold crashing but the leak issue has me rethinking that approach.

    Cask breather troubleshooting

I decided to go the route of turning off the CO2 and closing the vent opening on the cask widge when I wasn’t drawing a pint. It worked, I didn’t lose an entire tank of CO2 this time and my best bitter was good for about 2 weeks. It’s a bit of a pain to have to turn it on and off each time but I...

    Cask widge venting

Figured I’d throw an update out there! I tapped my cask on Monday and vented Tuesday for about 8 hours. This batch was really lively so I vented it for another 3 hours Wednesday afternoon. Rigged up my engine and pulled a couple pints. Great stuff! I think my standard amount of priming sugar...

    Hand Pull Beer Engine

Thanks for the responses I appreciated it! This kinda info is hard to find this side of the pond. I think I’ll go with Dixey’s shut off the gas in between usages. CD, I’ll check mine for a leakage point as well. I noticed one other weird thing: I set my regulator to about 5PSI, shut the bottle...

    Hand Pull Beer Engine

Quick question for those of you using a cask breather: what PSI do you set your primary CO2 regulator to? I lost almost an entire tank of CO2 on one pin cask a few months back! Do those of you who use them turn the CO2 off each night? Thanks!

    Cask widge venting

Hey John, I brewed a nice porter in November and had it over the holidays. It went pretty well, I fermented and then transferred into the pin with about 2oz of corn sugar to prime it. I wasn’t sure what amount to prime with, I’ve read people using anywhere from 0 to 4+ oz but I didn’t want...

    Cask breather troubleshooting

Thanks Honk. I think that’s the best bet for now. I’ll definitely do that in the future. Trying to dig up some schematics on how to take one of these apart but it’s hard to find.

    Cask breather troubleshooting

I have a cask breather I bought from RLBS a few months back and I noticed over the last couple days that my CO2 tank has been slowly emptying even when I’m not pulling pints. It seemed fine at first but not so much anymore. I’ve done the soapy water trick on all the connections and haven’t seen...

    Beer engine troubleshooting

Thanks for the insight! Yes it should’ve said “drip” not “drop” - that would be an entirely new problem :laugh8:. I was thinking over carbonation could be the culprit but it’s good to know I haven’t somehow damaged the beer engine instelf.

    Beer engine troubleshooting

Hi all, I finally rigged up my cask/beer engine system, tapped a cask of homebrewed porter with my cask widge, vented about 6 hours and have been greatly enjoying it. I’ve noticed a couple things going on with the beer engine. The first is that when I pull a pint, when the handle returns to...

    Cask widge venting

I recently got a cask widge to use with my pin cask and I’m curious about venting. I know typically casks can be vented for 24hrs give or take when using just a soft peg, but how long does one vent using a cask widge?

    Pils Changing colour over time?

I had that happen with a hefeweizen I brewed a couple years back. I think it was because I splashed it around a lot at bottling time. My thought is oxidized as well

    Beer engine clip replacement

That’s a great idea. I’ll have to check it out this weekend. Thanks!

    Beer engine clip replacement

Hello everyone, I‘ve recently been building a beer engine and cask setup and it’s nearly complete. I want to jazz it up a bit with some pump clips. I’ve seen some of the front clips on eBay but without a way to attach them to the handle. Does anyone have any ideas for a substitute to attach the...

    Pumpkin Ale

When it comes to pumpkin beers the pumpkin itself doesn’t contribute a lot in terms of flavors. If you have a good spice regimen, you can forego the pumpkin altogether and end up with a really great “pumpkin” beer. Maybe add a pound or a half pound of your base malt to make up for any...

    Best cleaner for beer engine

Hello all, I want to make sure I keep my beer engine clean and in good order in between casks. When I first got it on eBay it was pretty gross and I want to avoid that in the future. So: what’s the best cleaner to use to make sure it’s clean and doesn’t have nasties growing in it? Standard...

    Polypin vs. Cask

Hey everyone, Thanks for the links and thoughts. I’m in the “prioritizing” stages of figuring out which is the best path to go that’s the most cost effective. Cask breathers are really expensive here, I was thinking of picking one up from eBay from someone in the UK or maybe a company based...

    Polypin vs. Cask

Hello all, I’m gathering all the materials I need to build a nice setup to use with my beer engine that I scored off eBay. I brewed one batch of bitter and used a polypin to serve out of and it went pretty well, but it eventually went south at about 3 weeks post tapping. Herein lies my...
