Thanks all for your advice. I’ve settled on the following for a 23l batch, it’s currently chilling: 4kg Minch pale malt 230g crystal 150 170g wheat malt 140g crystal 100 20g roasted barley (I used all the choc malt in my stout last week) Mashed at 68C for one hour. 30 minute boil: 30g...

    What are you drinking 2024.

A pint of my American Amber Ale. This seems to be one of those magic kegs that don’t run out. It’s got noticeably better after a few weeks in the keg

I’m not either to be honest, I’ve seen a few bitter recipes with a little bit in, presumably for colour. Adding this increases the EBC from 17 to 23, which better puts it better in the style range. Would 30g in 23l contribute significantly to flavour?

    Recipe help

I ended up making another stout last week, and I love stout. Tomorrow’s brew day is going to be “something different” brew, I fancy making a bitter. I’ve had a look at a few OB recipes, the suggestions above and tweaked to what ingredients I have in. This is the current plan: 23L 1.043 OG 23...

Mine’s the same, although I haven’t got grommets, the temp probe lead just goes in through the door seal

    My Brewdays

The stout is down to 1.013 now, so a respectable 4.6%. I’ve had a sip out of the trial jar, it tastes really nice. However I am worried it looks brown, rather than the stouty blackness I expected despite the 500g chocolate malt addition. Hopefully it will look better once it’s in a pint pot...

    Re-using yeast from current brew

I’ve re used yeast a few times, usually when brewing fairly soon after kegging the first beer. I use a sanitised serving spoon to scoop out the trub and storing in a jam jar or pint glass in the fridge until it’s ready to be used again. Never done more than 2 generations though. I’ve used...

    What are you drinking 2024.

Thought I’d try something different this evening and bought an 8 pack of Hazy Jane: 2 normal, 2 gauva, 2 peach & 2 pineapple. This is the peach, jury’s still out

    Fleet and Gedney buying

Hi, If you have not already ordered have a look at Ferry Ales Brewery. They sell to the public, the cost is very reasonable if you can pick up and it’s not miles from you https://ferryalesbrewery.co.uk/product-category/home-brew-supplies/

    My Brewdays

Brew is now boiling. I always let the malt pipe stand a while on top of a stock pot after the sparge to catch the last drops off the grain. I sometimes throw this into the boil, sometimes not depending on the gravity. I’ve done the same tonight, and the litre or so of run off had a gravity of...

    My Brewdays

Didn’t know you could do that, thanks 👍🏻 I’ve never done them separately before either, I thought I’d try it this evening to see if it makes a difference

    My Brewdays

Oatmeal Stout Late evening brew, started at 7pm, it’s currently mashing. I’ve tweaked a previous recipe to suit ingredients I’ve got in already. 23l batch: 4kg crisp ale malt (last of the bag) 1kg Minch Pale malt (first of the bag) 500g porridge oats 500g Crystal 250 500g crisp chocolate...

    Recipe help

Hi, I have been looking back at my recipes and brewdays and nearly all of my brews have been either pale Ale/IPA/Golden ale types or stouts. I fancy brewing something different (not sour or funky though), and maybe something English. I’ve had a look on Brewfather etc, and the choices are...
