AG#15 - American Pale with pics

Right, as promised, here is AG#15, 14L of American Pale that I'm using to test the yeast I "found" in the bottom of a cask of Wickwar Breweries BOB. As you'll see from the pictures, I'm a 3-vessel man these days (BIAB worked well for me, but I always ended up getting a shed load on the kitchen...

Wickwar cask yeast - any good?

I've managed to get a bottle of dregs from a cask of Wickwar BOB. It's in good nick (the beer that floated to the top of the sample tastes fine), and it's working well in the 1L starter I've currently got it in. Does anyone know if this is the same yeast they use in brewing, or if it's a...

    I'm back! AG#14 - "Good Old Bitter"

Ok, own up, who actually noticed that I'd gone away  After a bit of time off due to redundancy, job hunting, exam taking and finally getting myself a new job (hurrah) before xmas, I've decided to do another brew! This is going to be a nice, standard, traditional easy drinking bitter...

    How long?

Ok, my Sarah Hughes mild hasn't really gone to plan. 4 weeks in primary as it wouldn't shift from 1.020 (including a couple of good stirs and a packet of S04 to try and nudge things along), and into a secondary to try and let it rest as the consensus was that bottling at 1.019 or so wasn't a...

Stuck brew (1st one) - should I bottle?

My first stuck brew. It was a sarah-hughes clone with a lot of crystal and mashed at 67. OG was 1.052 and it went down to 1.020 and stayed there for a week. I tried the usual, upping the temp to 22°, giving it a good but gentle stir, and then adding a sachet of S04 to try and shift it...

    Bugger. Redundant again.

Oh well, it lasted nearly three years this time, so I can't complain. Anyone need an IT manager in the Bristol area with 17 years IT experience? :?

    Metal crown cap bottles

Has anyone used these yet? I've seen them with various beers/ciders in, in a few different places and have bought a couple of bottles of cider from a local discounty-warehousey thing for a quid each to see if I can use the bottles for posting. They are only 475ml, but I was thinking they...

AG#12 - Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild (not dark!)

I was thinking about doing a Belgian Blonde first, but the missus said no 8-) Ok, more truthfully I didn't have time to make a starter for the WLP500 and I can't brew next weekend so decided to use up the MO and Crystal I had in stock to get another brew in stock for the festive season. This...

Does this sound right for a Belgian Blonde

No, not a female. A beer. ;) I'm using what I have to try and estimate something like a Leffe Blonde, as the missus had a couple on holiday and loved it. Going to make the Candi syrup myself so will be aiming for around 65EBC but it'll probably be way off! Yeast will be WLP500, fermented at...

Winter beer. ..Old Tom or Sarah Hughes?

As winter approaches ( ) I'm getting ready to do a winter brew to make those long cold nights a little more bearable. As I don't have a massive tun (missus) it'll either be 20L of Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby or 15L of Old Tom, both from BYOBRA. Has anyone done either? I've seen some threads...

    Cherry Juice Wine

Would this be suitable for a cherryish rose wine? http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/ ... =264685493 It's mainly apple juice, but with 20% cherry and a little elderflower. No preservatives from what I can see, and 100g sugar per litre. I was thinking maybe two of these, 1xRGJ and 500g...

    Blimey. Synthetic yeast!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23244768. Saccharomyces cerevisiae too, no less! Apparantly could be used in vaccines and other stuff. I always said the yeasties were our friends!

What has happened to me erdinger?

This was a clone of Aleman's Effin Erdinger. I'm sure it isn't meant to look like this (after 10 days fermentation and 3 days crash cooling at 2C). It also has a bit of a funky, nutty taste that I wasn't quite expecting. Now the yeast hasn't completely dropped out yet (it is still cloudy)...

AG 9 - Effin Erdinger Ish

Right - finally time to get the brewfridge doing what it was meant to. Controlling a brew! I went with a rough estimation of Aleman's Effin Erdinger recipe: 3kg Wheat Malt 1.5kg Crisp Maris Otter 1kg Crisp Lager Malt Mashed for 2.5hrs at 67C with a 60min batch sparge (yeah - not my idea. Had...

Mixing kits - finally, one under way.

Right, I've finally got my brew fridge all connected up and working with the STC1000 and greenhouse heater, heating and cooling lovely. So what was your first beer to christen it FBSF, I hear you ask. Was it a lovely Erdinger clone, or maybe a fragrant Pilsener? Perhaps even a Belgian dubble...

Is there a decent dried yeast for lager?

Hi all, I'm just about to convert my beer fridge into a brewfridge (I have the STC1000, alll the wiring and a heat tube...), and really fancy doing a decent lager, brewing it at lager temperatures. I've used a number of different yeasts for ales, and have got on well with most of the dried...

    Rhubarb and "Custard" vodka

Nothing extraordinary, but a lovely shot drink served chilled in the summer, or even poured over a decent clotted cream ice cream. The "Custard" flavour comes from the vanilla pods. Ingredients: 2L kilner jar, 1L Vodka, 300g Rhubarb stalks cut into 1" segments, 300g white sugar, 1 vanilla pod...

Brewing for a friend - legality?

Ok, now I understand we can't brew for reward and it has to be for personal use. That's fine. But one of my mates in work has asked if I can brew a pressure barrel for his birthday. He won't be paying me as but wants to provide the ingredients i.e. he'll turn up with a bag of grain, hops, and...

    AG#8 Summer Pale Ale

Summer - ha. If it ever bloody arrives. Well, if it does, this should be ready in time. It's a basic pale summer ale with a good level of bitterness. 4.5kg MO 100g Caramalt 100g Torrified Wheat Mashed for 90 mins @ 67C, Boiled for 75 mins. 40g Perle (10%AA) @ 60mins 15g EKG (6.4%AA) @...
