    Hi, newbie from wigan

Hi from an ex Wiganer. Like others have said, it's all gone a bit quiet on here lately. I'm guessing you got your stuff from wilkinsons and you won't go far wrong buying your beginner equipment from there.

    IPA bittering hops

Im hoping to do a clone of Flowers IPA, Im sure most of the older guys on here would have sampled this beer at some point. I just need a little help with the recipe. In my recipe book it suggests using Target as the bittering hops but my Dad is dead against Northern brewer or Target as bittering...

I just cant get that bottled beer taste.... help !

What yeast are you using? How is your water? Go to your water suppliers web site and put your post code in. Fermentation temp? Yeast was my main problem, I was using gervin yeast but switched to safale 05 and wyeast 1968. The wyeast is £7 a go but spread over 40 bottles its a small investment...

    My water report

I have been trying to improve my equipment and techniques over the last year when i decided to finally look at the main ingredient of my beer. so I have checked with my local supplier and this is my water report. I mainly brew Bitter,IPA and APA in 20 litre batches. I have no idea where to...

Just couldn't get the hop flavour through.....

As others have said recently, go for hop bursting late on. Using the same amount of hops you could have done this. 10g 90 mins 20g 15 mins 20g 10 mins 20g 5 mins 10g 0 mins 20g dry hop I reckon you would have more hop flavour from the schedule. You are right about the yeast but 05 yeast seems...

Can anyone identify this beer and fathom a recipe?

The colour is going to be the hardest part to get right but after reading around for half an hour this is my recipe. I'm quite liking the sound of this beer and will brew it after my fermenters are clear. 20l batch 5.5 kg pale 200g crystal 50g roasted barley 75g special b Apparently it is...

Colour comparison between LME and DME

As you've stated, there is a big difference between the different brands but I've banged the following into my brewing software. The important thing to remember is that you use less dme to achieve the same gravity due to the water content of the lme. I've searched around and the ratio is...

    Recipe help

Thanks for the help, I use brewmaster on the ipad. I usually have a bittering addition at 60 flavour at 20 and aroma at 5. I will have a look at the recipe mentioned above and will use the hop schedule style listed above. Will one packet of us-05 be enough? I've had trouble with slow starts in...

    Recipe help

I'm going to brew an American pale ale on Saturday and will use marris otter (5kg) and crystal (300g) and mash at 68 deg. I need help with the hop schedule though. I have 100g cascade and 100g of Amarillo. I aiming for the bitterness and aroma levels of punk ipa although I know I won't get the...

    Is it infected?

I'd stop opening/looking/testing it especially close to the end of the main fermentation, the less co2 given off the more chance of nasties getting in. In future i'd use 2112 California Yeast from wyeast, known to be able to ferment quite clean between 15-20 degrees, will never be as clean as...

    Frozen?!

I can only comment on what I see. It wasn't evident that this had been spoken about. No offence intended. This forum has been a great source of information for me even before I registered and have never seen anybody get into trouble with mods. This is probably due to the speed at which the mods...

    Frozen?!

Don't think anyone was even hinting at that, if anything you've brought the issue up.

Coopers, Canadian Blonde tweak & set up

I would save your spraymalt for another brew then. Maybe add 1.5 kg of dry wheat extract to your coopers kit and make sure you use a suitable yeast. I'm sure there is a dry yeast you can get in most brew shops. Wouldn't worry about adding any hops.

Coopers, Canadian Blonde tweak & set up

This is a great kit for tweaking as it isn't very malty, very bitter or hoppy. You could easily make an english bitter, a wheat beer or a good IPA from it. The spray malt you bought can be used as a replacement for the sugar that the kit asks for in the instructions and will add more flavour and...

    Coopers Australian Bitter-1.5kg LME Alterinative?

I'd use 1kg of light dry malt/spray malt and 250g of table sugar (~£9) or brew it to 21 litres with 1 kg of light dry malt/spray malt(~£8)

    Yeast experiment

Forgot to mention hops. I've got goldings, fuggles and northern brewer. Looks like I can do 2 batches of this and compare. Thanks for the link.

    Yeast experiment

I'm thinking of brewing 2 almost identical brews straight after each other. Here are the ingredients I have available. 12 kg marris otter 9 kg lager malt 1kg dark crystal 400g chocolate malt 1kg wheat malt 200g roasted barley The 2 yeasts I have are coming up on their best before dates...

Any kits or extract recipes similar to these beers?...

Have a look at the brewferm kits, they are brewed to a short length of approx 10 litres, they have a good range of styles that will suite you.

    Kegging or Bottling?

Seconded, I'd look at king kegs. The only downside is the ability to share but maybe friends and family could sample from the keg rather than giving them bottles. Here are my experiences and I am not biased as I own 4 corny kegs, a king keg and I still bottle too. Corny kegs are great for...
