    Bench lever bottle capper

Hi, I really liked your review and as a result bought one of these cappers. First impressions are that it is really well made and more stable than some others. Unfortunately, it came without instructions and I'd grateful for some advice. I've figured out how to move the capping head up and...

    Festival New Zealand pilsner.

Excellent. Some really good advice there. I particularly like the idea of tapping the FV to dislodge the hops. Incidentally, the hops were added on day 9 and temperature had been held at 21Deg.C thoughout. Its the first time I've experienced such an enduring krausen. Love to know what yeast...

    Festival New Zealand pilsner.

Thanks for the advice. I'm very much a newby but leaving the hops in for 16 days seems a 'long' time. Ritchies recommend 5 days. Any thoughts?

    Festival New Zealand pilsner.

Advice please. Instructions clearly say 'Don't stir in the hop pellets'. So after 36 hours they have broken up but are sitting happily on top of the krausen. Should I heed the instructions or give it a good stir?

    Festival New Zealand pilsner.

Just getting back to brewing I thought I'd try a well recommennded kit - Ritchies Festival New Zealand Pilsner. All looks fine but the fermentation pattern is not what I'd expected. Luckily, I can keep temperatures fairly constant. In this case it was 21DegC which was well within the...

    biab , og question,

Beer Engine suggests your OG should have been around 1040. So yes, it does seem a bit low.

Bottle blaster, bottle tree and rinser (avvinatore)

Just wondering what cleaner/sanitiser you use. The reason I ask is that I've never seen the 'standard' VWP described as no rinse. I am sure there must be other items that will do the job. For instance, Milton is 'no rinse' when used on baby bottles.

    How much yeast to use?

Based on a couple of trial extract brews it seems that there is no problem in splitting and storing sachets of yeast. Half a sachet went into an 11l pale ale brew a couple of weeks ago and in 6 days had fermented down to a target gravity of 1009. Abv is calculated at 3.9%. The remainder was...

Re-using 'dry' hops in the next boil.

Still in FV2. I plan to remove the hops from FV2 on the same day I brew with them. Should be OK then?

Re-using 'dry' hops in the next boil.

It's brew day on Thursday and I'll have 25g of whole Cascade hops which I've previously used for dry hopping. Question is can I re-use these as bittering hops at 60 minutes and add flavour/aroma hops later in the boil? The thinking is that dry hopping doesn't 'drive-out' the bittering quality...

    Yeast crust

Thanks, Rob. That's what I guessed but wanted to check.

    Yeast crust

I've just done an extract brew using US-05 yeast. As expected it has formed a nice thick surface crust. Prior to dry hopping I want rack from FV1 to FV2. Question is should I attempt to remove the crust or syphon through it? Any advice appreciated.

    How much yeast to use?

Thanks for such a quick reply. To answer your question I'll be brewing intermittently when I have time and fermentation space. I like your idea of yeast cakes and that's certainly one for the future. At the moment though I already have two variables in the hops and grain used so I don't really...

    How much yeast to use?

I'm experimenting with different hops and grains using liquid malt extract as a base. Grains will be steeped in the kettle (a big pan) before adding the LME. Hops will be added at different times in the boil. As some brews may 'fail' I plan to use a shorter brew length of 11 litres. Yeast will...

    Little Bottler

Thanks Oz11 and Bob. I'm now convinced that this is the way to go. Do you have any tips on batch priming to ensure the sugar is evenly distributed? I guess dissolve in beer or luke warm water and stir. John (another pubsandbeer.co.uk contributor)

    Little Bottler

Previous threads have suggested syphoning from a plain FV to a FV with Little Bottler attached after primary fermentation. The thinking is that this leaves most of the sediment in FV1. I am concerned that this additional exposure to air might increase likelihood of contamination. Also there's a...

    DIY Beer Crates

Came across some plastic crates on eBay which look ideal. You can find them here: http://tinyurl.com/cgrq25h. They look a snip at £5 plus delivery. Am I missing something?
