Fermentation done in 4 days? or hydrometre broken?

Thanks for all the feedback. I have been using Safale yeasts mostly. Good to know Nottingham is so much quicker. Look forward to taste the result. But, will first let it clean up after itself for a while.

Fermentation done in 4 days? or hydrometre broken?

Just took a gravity reading as the airlock gone quiet very sudden at day 4 of the fermentation. I was fully expecting the 1020 stuck fermentation problem. To my surprise, it reads 1012. FG according to BeerSmith is 1013 (brew details below). I have done more than 30 brews, some fermented longer...

    Black Rock, Golden Ale

Nearly 2 months in the bottle now, so decided to see what happened. To my surprise, turned out quite nice (just like Lesigne predicted). Much cleaner now. Pretty straightforward beer that is quite 'sessionable'. Nothing memorable or outstanding, just a nice pint of beer.

    Coopers Irish Stout Review

I'm not a beer historian, but from my limited knowledge, the Porter style of beer pre-dates the Stout. If I remember correctly, the barley is just not roasted as deep in a porter compared to a stout. Nevertheless, never tried mixing a stout with a lighter beer, so will give that a go. Thanks for...

    Coopers Irish Stout Review

Just had a sample from the testing jar after I bottled my Irish Stout. Tastes very promising. This is how I did my kit: - Added 650g amber DME, - Added 750g of organic cane sugar, - Added 300g of organic barley malt syrup. That boosted the OG to 1.062 I happened to have a sachet of...

    Brewferm, Diablo

Well, as no-one posted after me, I might as well go straight to the point; here is a 4 month in the bottle update: - As expected, no trace left of the (delicious) Willamette in the nose, so that was a silly waste of hops by me (sorry ppl, I know we are in short supply of hops and promise not...

    Black Rock, Golden Ale

My 12 Litre experiment turned out okay, but not great. It was simply not balanced (or not how I imagine a golden ale to taste like). Still, to give this kit a fair chance, I picked up another can at my LHBS and decided to brew this to the instructions on the can. Well, something close to it. I...

    Better Brew, IPA

Hey Dave, It took about a month for the residual sweetness to disappear, and I used less dextrose (see my earlier posts). So yours may take longer (and will be more fizzy). Just leave it for a while (and 3 days is very soon to sample, I never had a beer carbonating that quickly). Cheers,

    Brewferm, Diablo

This was my second attempt at this kit. First kit brewed per instructions, but without any temperature control. It came out nice, but with some off bottles that tasted a little sour. As this was my second brew ever, it may have been that my sanitising regime wasn't quite up to standard yet, or...

    Coopers European Lager Review

With the caveat of the not entirely fair comparison, I thought it may be useful to share the final comparison tasting between the Brewferm, BlackRock and Coopers (not entirely the same). After 6 months, the Blackrock is no longer in the lead, the Coopers is by now the richest tasting beer...

    Brewferm, Pils Review

With the caveat of the not entirely fair comparison, I thought it may be useful to share the final comparison tasting between the Brewferm Pils, BlackRock Pilsner Blonde and Coopers European Lager (see my entries elsewhere for full info). After 6 months, the Blackrock is no longer in the lead...

    Black rock pilsner blond.

With the caveat of the not entirely fair comparison, I thought it may be useful to share the final comparison tasting between the Brewferm, BlackRock and Coopers (see above for brew/time differences). After 6 months, the Blackrock is no longer in the lead, the Coopers is by now the richest...

    Re: Festival Razorback IPA Review

Thought to share my cock-up in the hope it will prevent someone else making the same mistake. Here's the mistake I made: contrary to the instructions for bottling to add the provided dextrose after syphoning into the bottling bucket, I decided to syphon the beer onto the dextrose assuming it...

    Black Rock, Golden Ale

About time for a little update on this experiment. On 07/06 (after 3.5 weeks), the SG had reduced to 1.015 and I decided to bottle. I batch primed it with 72g of dextrose. The carbonation worked great, alcohol is just slightly above 4%. I think the result is quite different from what this beer...

    Better Brew, IPA

Quick update: 1 month in the bottle. Residual sweetness has disappeared, resulting in a nice dry, crisp IPA. A little less full-bodied compared to the St Peter's IPA that I brewed, but probably more refreshing/easier to drink. Verdict for now: good, but not great.

    Beer Kit Reviews

Could you please add a topic on the Muntons Connoisseurs IPA Bitter? There is a topic on "Muntons IPA", but this seems to relate to the Muntons Gold Indian Pale Ale. Perhaps you can rename that topic to clarify the difference? I'm well into the fermentation and would like to share my...

    Black Rock, Golden Ale

I came across a video on YouTube on this kit where they brewed just the can plus 10 litres of water. As I was running low on DME and/or dextrose at the time, plus my stack of empty bottles was running low (my favourite "drinking' problem to have) I wanted to give this very simple brew a go...

    Coopers Original Stout Review

as an experiment, I split this batch in two; one as-is and one with the addition of some coffee. Here is what I did: - started brew on 05/05 with 1 kg of amber DME to 20l - very violent fermentation, even blow-off tube couldn't quite handle the amount/ferocity of the krautzen - transferred into...

    Better Brew, IPA

A quick update on this brew: - Brewed on 20/04 with 1kg of Amber DME - Dry hopped on 02/05 with 50g East Kent Goldings and 20g of Willamette - Transferred to secondary on 09/05, and - Bottled on 13/05 with 5g/l of dextrose Taste test after about 2 weeks in the bottle (more than a month...
