I haven't been on for a while beause I haven't had much interesting to say apart from a spoilt brew (left too long in the fermentor) due to work pressures, DIY and a house move.
I did an AG the other day and I was yet again told off for brewing in the house (even though the missus was away)...
I switched to videne from VWP but I still rinse and air dry. The rinsing used to be the longest part of preping bottles before I made a simple bottle rinser from copper piping with plastic tubing on the spouts. Does 6 in one go very quickly :thumb:
I suggest you try something like Burotn's Summer Ale and dry hop it with fuggles or you prefer something more citrusy like cascade. It makes a nice pleasant drink :thumb:
I should probably add that I decided to use quest smack packs again after last time's failure. This time they worked a treat and went to work with no delay. I did though have some safale on standby just in case.
I used the following recipe substituting the amarillo hops for cascade:
Recipe Type: All Grain
Yeast: WLP007
Yeast Starter: Yes
Batch Size (Gallons): 5.5
Original Gravity: 1.085
Final Gravity: 1.017
IBU: 90
Boiling Time (Minutes): 90
Color: 9SRM
Primary Fermentation (# of Days & Temp): 2wks @...
Then what's the point of using a smack pack if you have to then use a starter? The packs say it can be used up to 6 months after packaging. The whole point of the smack pack is it should be fire (smack) and forget until you need to pitch it. Evidently it is far from that.
Having had one bad...
During my latest trip over the pond I was directed to a bar with a good selection of ales and decided to try to make my way down the IPA list. I tried a couple which were really good and then I tried Dogfish head 90 min IPA. All I can say is wow! I am now in two minds as I was set on doing a...
Keep it in the fv for now and use some gelatin later in the keg to help clear. You risk the brew getting too hoppy if you leave of in the keg until Xmas. Unless you are hop mad. Also I thing in a hop sock you prob won't clear as effectively as you would without.
I whipped this one out last night and despite a couple of minor niggles I am getting this AG lark down to a slick manoeuvre now, in that I mean that I forgot nothing until lastminute this time round. That said it still takes a bloody long time. Even though I started straight after work it was...
