Harris Quickfine filters - where to get a replacement bag?

As the thread title says, where do you get a replacement bag for a Harris Quickfine. I've been give one, it is minus bag, but when the bag was with it there was a hole in the material so wasn't much good as a filter.

    Stuck ferment?

In April (23rd) I started a batch of dandelion wine, OG 1090, i used Youngs GP yeast from a tub that was bought last year. It went like a train for the first three weeks and since then slowed down and started clearing so today I racked it off only to find the SG is still 1060. So is it time to...

    Freezing Elderflowers?

A general question, is there any reason why you wouldn't freeze elderflowers? My mum was asking about it for possibly keeping some for use out of season for making cordial and infusing jellies and I have spotted the potential for making a few gallons of wine out of season as well.

    Cherry Juice Wine

So there I was last Friday waiting for a train at Oxford and my sister's partner came over and said M&S Food were selling 3lts of Cherry Juice for £5. Well all I was going to do was sit on a train for 3 hours so didn't exactly need to worry about lugging the cartons about so bought some. I...

    Pipeline

Does anyone use pipeline (the purple beer line cleaner) for sterilsing equipments? I only ask as I have several litres of the stuff which I was given, it is Potassium Hydroxide so not very nice stuff to play with. I have already used some to clean a fermenter in ~1:40 mixture.

    Chill haze

When I got in tonight I looked into the drinks fridge and noticed a bottle of the red grape & cranberry I made abotu a month ago had developed a rather odd colour, so I pulled it out and inspected it. The colour change was bacause of a fairly strong haze which has developed in the bottles. They...

    Are plastic fermenting buckets repairable?

I was planning to make up a 5 gallon batch but the 5 gallon fermenting bucket I was going to use has developed a crack. It was first apparent when I put some cleaning solution in and it started dripping out from the heated joint between the base of the bucket and the side along a section about...

    Elderberries

Now that I've got a load of Elderberries I have got to the point of separating them from the sprigs. On another thread someone mentioned freezing the sprgs whole and then combing the berries off. This works really well, not a single squashed berry. But, and there is always one of those, the...

    Blackberry Wine

Well, it's that time of year again. On Friday & Saturday last week I went on a picking frenzy, gathered 21 1/2lb of blackberries. The 1 1/2 spare went to my mum for pies, crumbles etc. The other 20 was squashed with a tatty masher and boiled for a short while in our massive stock pot along with...

Is there are maximum no. of times you can use sorbate?

As the title says, is there a maximum number of times it might ne necessary to sorbate a batch of wine? THe reason I ask is I sorbated a batch of supermarket wine about 10 days ago and I am still getting the odd bubble out of it. I have shaken it to try and degass it but still they rise. So I've...

    Kit FG

I've got a Cooper's stout kit on the go, I started it on Friday (so 5 days ago). It started at an OG of 1037 and by yesterday it was 1012, I've got the same reading today, but that SG seems a little high (or to put it another way too sweet). Should a kit like this be finishing above 1010 or do I...

    Another elderflower wine question

A couple of weeks ago I made up a gallon of elderflower wine, the recipe I am using called for 1 1/2lb of suger (I used a mix of granulated and caster) and 8oz of sultanas. After it had cooled to the point I could put the yeast in I measured the SG at 1080. I've just remeasured it as all had...

    Oil on dried fruit

Hi All I've made a few wines and for the recipes needing dried fruit I always have a problem with the veg oil that is sprayed onto the fruit by the makers. How do you get rid of it, recently I have tried soaking the fruit in boiling water and letting the oil rise to the top and then pouring...
