    Free Bottles East London

I have a load of brown bottles, 150 maybe, that I don't need any more. 330 and 500ml. They're all cleaned and have the label removed, a lot have been sanitised and have foil over the top from when I last used them. Free to anyone in any quantity. Pick up only, obviously.

    330ml San Miguel bottles

Anyone use them? The 330ml brown ones? I got given a load as I need to bottle my latest in small bottles (dont fancy 500ml at a time of 7.2%). My capper does them fine and I assume as they contain lager they'll be good to hold a homebrew carbonated to lager levels. You agree?

A pair of firsts - sprinkled yeast an immersion chiller

Just did a quick extract saison recipe which contained the aforementioned firsts. I normally rehydrate my yeast and have always boiled small and topped up with cold to get the temp down. This time I borrowed a friends DIY immersion chiller and I am sold, it got 12 litres of wort down to 28 C...

Anyone fitted a brewferm tap to a Wilko FV?

I'd like to do it to make a bottling bucket but my internet skills are failing to return instructions on how to go about it.

    Thoughts on my Saison

I'm going to give a saison ago, for both variety and lack of ability to keep the FV cool. I'm not one for other people's recipes so have put this together. I adjusted attenuation as FG was put at 1.014 but everything I've read said this yeast will go a lot lower. Sccording to the style...

    Boxes for Bottle Storage

I'm only 4 brews in and the wife is already annoyed with the number of bottles. Has anyone found any plastic crates/boxes particularly well suited for 500ml bottles? Stackable and good height and fit? Nice and cheap? I'd guess vertical sides (rather than sloping) would be happy to hold...

    Mock Goose Island IPA

Had a late night brew session last night that went a bit awry, the recipe was meant to be 20l and around 5.5 % and 55 IBUs (to match Goose Island) but I was lazy and didn't get the immersion chiller out, thinking the small boil topped up would get it down in temp enough. Alas when I realised it...

    New Samuel Adams Heli-Yum beer

Using noble gasses to bring out the flavour of noble hops. Sounds interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Tby91aTGF4

Effect of fluctuating temperature on fermentation

I fancy giving a saison a go, both for something different and because when the sun starts coming out my house is going to be on the warm side for some yeasts. To get the 26-32 the saison yeasts suggest though I'm going to need to put it in the vicinity of a radiator. As such I reckon the temp...

Does anyone else suffer from dry hop sanitation paranoia?

I'm only 3 brews in but each time I've dry hopped I can think of something I've done that could infect the brew and it rests on my mind until I bottle and am proved otherwise. It's always something unplanned, like this time around the hop bag came undone and hops started popping out, so I...

I keep getting high apparent attenuations.

3 brew in and my apparent attenuations have been 84% (S-04), 84% (US-05) and 88% (US-05), leaving me with far lower FGs than the recipe calculator estimated and far higher ABVs than I was expecting. All brews extract (the S-04 with some Crystal). Why is this? Or is it likely my hydrometer...

Cold crashing prior to dry hopping

My temperature control involves moving the FV around the house. The recent warm spell has been good for my current brew but just noticed there is a cold spell this weekend, which would be perfect for cold crashing in the conservatory. Thing is I wont have dry hopped by that point (currently...

Do you have set hop schedules you use for different beers?

I'm thinking more for flavour/aroma than bittering. So if you're doing an APA you'll use X gr at 10 and Y gr at 0 then Z gr for dry hopping? And if you're doing an IPA you'll use A gr at 15, B gr at 10... and so on. So skeleton recipes that you just alternate hop types within?

Dry hopping and syphoning into a bottling bucket

For my first two brews I did a one bucket approach, brewing in my Coopers FV then dry hopping inside a nylon bag then bottling from it using bottling wand and the carbonation drops that came with the kit in the bottles. For my current brew I want to batch prime so I've bought a second FV from...

Have they changed Sierra Nevada Pale Ale?

Or am I just drinking/brewing a lot hoppier beers than I used to? I've always thought of SNPA as reasonably hoppy ale, and something I'd one day try and clone with a home brew, but I had a few pints of it last night and found it very underwhelming compared to some hoppy affairs (eg Brodies IPA...

Extract #3 - Aji Amarillo APA

Thought it was time I gave my beers names, so Aji Amarillo it is. This was meant to be a bit of a larger brew but as I went to pour my extract into the boiling water I realised I only had 2kg not 2.5kg so had a mad dash to the brewing software for a quick tweak. Was going to use the same...

Do any time-pressed brewers steep grains on a prior day?

Trying to sqeeze an extract brew in one evening but once I've steeped some grains then got a 60 minute boil on then had 20 minutes of cooling then pitched I'm looking at 3 hours at least, and I've never normally eaten till 8.30pm. Are there any issues with steeping my grains then cooling and...

Beginner needs hoppy ale recipe feedback please

I'm due a new brew (only #3, so very much a beginner) and looking to focus on the amarillo hops I have in the freezer, whilst utilising some high AA Columbus I have for the bittering. I'm a fan of hoppy American ales, and the bit of the recipe I'd most like feedback on is the hop schedule. For...

Hop character for various boil lengths

When bittering, after 45 minutes of boiling is a hop leaving anything more than bitterness? If it is, at what point - 60/90 mins - are you losing everything (assuming you do at some point) bar its AA? Where I'm getting to with this is can I use a cheap, high AA bittering hop in what I want to...
