Have tried to grow on some yeast from both a bottle of Duvel and a Chimay Blue, neither of which have taken.

The DME I used to boil up was in date, but had been open a while. Was a bit "muddy" looking after I had boiled up for 10 mins. Is this likely to be the cause? have followed instructions found on several threads on here

Also don't expect to see too much activity - it can take afew days to start - I have cultured duvel before and I started with about 200ml of water and a tablespoon of dme - boiled and cooled and added to a milk bottle and covered with foil. Then after about four days I put in a dj with more cooled dme/water and used an airlock. Before I stepped it up there was no visible activity in the milk bottle - I gave it a swirl every day. Hope this helps :)
