but where your pt100 says 78mm mine is 100mm ??????

also looking at plans you you going to have a 2mm wall all around probe ????

Just had a chat with a friend of mine who happens to have a lathe. So I have designed a thermowell that is also a bulkhead. I will get him my picture and see what he can do with it.

genius!

if you struggle then let me know, as I get these from this chap on ebay: here

Am sure he would be up for a bit of customisation of something smaller etc if necessary, as he is very amenable

I just used the measurement from the probes I have. I guess they are all different. But the length could be extended. I only came up with a 2mm wall thickness as a guess to ensure it was strong enough to take a few knocks and cleaning, as the thermowell will stay in place in the HLT. It could be reduced to 1 mm or 1.5 mm. The thickness should not be an issue as the inside will be 6 mm to fit the probe snugly, and brass is a good conductor. I will also ask him if it can be made in stainless steel and that could be reduced to 1 mm, but that may be too much for his lathe. He makes model boat boilers as a hobby. I will keep you posted.

lol you lost me there are these not same as ????

What I am planning is to have the thermowell as a one piece unit. Like the normal bulkhead fitting but with the brass tube attached and a nut on the outside like that one.

i see sweet i have just re measure my pt100 and it is 5.15mm and my probe on my herms is shorter and is 5.05 mm thick it looks like not all pt100 probs are all the same thickness

They look the same, but a tank connector doesn't go all the way through at 15mm, which is why a lot of people have to file them out to get a 15mm pipe to go all the way through - Vossy posted some stainless steel ones http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=20824

the ones on ebay are milled out at the tank end to 15mm.

Hence it would then depend if you can "seal" the tank end of the connector

with the ones I posted, the copper pipe goes all the way through > perhaps you are installing it with the threaded part inside the boiler to make the thermowell pocket with a length of pipe? as normally you'd want the threaded part on the outside to make a connection for a tap? :wha:

:wha: :wha: you dont need to on these wot i got from tool station are wot i use on my mash tun i could push a 15mm copper pipe all the way through on ones i got ???? unless the ones you got was different ????

now that is interesting (in context), as I think the ones you have go all the way through and are from tool station, however mine were from screwfix and they do two different ones, neither of which are 15mm all the way through.

the ones you have have got those lugs on the tank side.

Hmm, I will bear that in mind next time I need some tank connectors!

where was your thermowell from by the looks of it when i was there other week look like pt100s you was using :thumb:

The length of the "Thermowell" is not critical as it is only the end 25mm of the probe that does the sensing!

Yes they were PT100s I was using.
I am very fortunate to have a precision engineer as one of my friends.
He turned my wells out of brass bar and succeeded in getting the walls less than 1mm thick, this speeds up the temperature reaction time (necessary for a HERMS unit).
Have now orderd one of the temp guages for my mash tun.

Been watch tread with interest, as a stalker
I was under the impression that these pt100s were good to go as they were, but from a comment by Uncle they may not be, bit confused me, as usual.

Looks like you have it about solved Taz. :D
Bob sorry I didn't send your nuts, if you still want a couple let me know :D

I had a quick go today, but only had a small bit of brass to hand, but made this fitting m8 thread one end the other is drilled 8 mm to take a piece of 8mm copper tube to form the thermowell.

Fitting ready to have thermowell added, pt100 removed and then soldered up, with a blanking cap as Taz did.

No worries Springer. As it turned out I had to re order 2 PT100's and they came with different threads. The ones now have look like 1/2" bsp thread rather than the M8 so it wouldn't have worked with the new ones and the M8 one didn't work. So it's back to the drawing board.
