Is there anyone out there who prefers the use of british style plastic pressure barrels (basic or king keg) to that of the more modern corny keg system?
Just be interesting to know if there's folks out there preferring this without doubt more basic, less technical method of brewing.

I have half a dozen or so pressure barrels and get quite jealous when I see these modern looking corny keg systems force carbonating beers/lagers etc before dispensing them from pub style handled fonts.

However on reflection just how convenient and cost effective is this method compared to the good old pressure barrels?
Cost of buying Co2 refills and how much of that do u go through in comparison?

Love to hear thoughts, comments etc all will be greatly recieved.
Along with any pics of pressure barrel style systems, bars, brewer:drunk:ies etc with any tips. Especially is there a method of force carbonating to get the beer ready as quick as the corny ones and any tips at all of keeping pressure barrel beer cold especially in summer warmth.
Cheers:drunk::drunk:

if considering corny kegs remember they are just the container aspect of a dispensing system, needing a regulated co2 supply and balanced or restricted line to a tap, and not forgetting the crucial temperature control, or stable temperature cellar, or inline shelf chiller option ;) Tho when set up and tuned correctly the simple pleasure of flipping the tap to get a consistent and purrfect pour is far superior to the every pint is different pour from a PB.

However it all depends on what your supping, an english bitter with a low level of condition can be fed to a handpump by a polykeg as is, or even a pb with a little modding to accept a low pressure regulated co2 supply. (a polypin needs no co2 as it can collapse)

iirc the run of the mill PB will take pressures circa 10 psi, theoretically you can pressure condition 2+vols of co2 at low temperatures at that sort of pressure, the difficulty being finding a fridge big enough and a free shelf to sit it on ;) and if your going to the trouble and expense of a temp controlled kegging box you may as well get the proper kegs,

for a budget option look out for 2nd use polykegs, 30l pet bottles with plastic sankey style fittings to accept couplers.
they appear on other brewforums like jims in the less regimented for sale sections..
