Righty-ho, I've got several opened bags of grains, hops, etc and only one yeast packet (Nottingham) left so to try and use them all up I re-visited my Black Sheep clone from many moons ago. Whilst brewing this I realised that I'd have to open up a new packet of Challenger hops just to get 19g's out of it so I thought I'd use an alternative of Cascade as I had some open and for some reason....they smelt nice.

Off we go, recipe is as follows :

20l batch size

3.84 kg Pale Malt (crisp)
0.46kg Torrified wheat
0.16kg Crystal
0.07kg black malt

Mashed at 65.6c for 90 mins

19g Cascade @ 90 mins
19g EKG @ 90 mins
9g Fuggles @ 90 mins

17g EKG @ 10 mins

Brew went as expected but I've somehow ended up 2.5l over my batch size?! I know I was slightly over my pre-boil volume but not by anywhere near 2.5l. The last 15 or so brews have had nearly 100g of hops in them so I've started with 30l pre-boil volume, this one has a LOT less hop material in the kettle. In addition, it wasn't a really vigorous boil so that may have impacted on boil off. As a result, I got 1043 SG and not the 1046 that I was expecting. Nevermind, will still be great beer as it smells amazing.

Just had a thought - I've got about 20g of Cascade left over. I'm going to bung them in this brew as a dry hop.

No particular reason, just fancy it.

Will post pics in a day or two when ferment has died down a wee bit.

^Dry hop, why not? 20g is a very moderate amount, so no chance of ruining the brew going ott. I've only had Black Sheep once as I had to cope with the disappointment of being in Yorkshire and still not finding anyone to teach me the secrets of Ecky Thump... ;) Remember liking it!

Had more than I thought......40g of Cascade plopped in.

Nice

One week passed since dry hops went in and now I've moved AG#27 to a keg, my glass 2ndary carboy is empty. Let's get this beer clear and ageing for taking to Dunfie's place next month.
