The mash is on....

Bit of a cock up with ingredients, what I thought was a bag of choc malt wasn't  the grist is now:

9.5kg Pale
1.3kg Flaked Barley
730g Crystal
730g Toasted Oats
270g Roasted Barley
450g Brown Malt
200g Amber Malt
100g Black Malt

Should be complex

Element failure

Looks like this beer doesn't want to be brewed.........80l of unboiled wort down the drain.......again.

One of the elements has failed about 30 minutes into the brew it probably just needs a de-scale

I have cleaned out the thermobox and transferred the wort to it, the plan is to sort the element out tomorrow and start the boild again. Just going to have to gamble on hop extraction.

Christ wez ... some things are sent to try us!

You'll find it will be better for all the effort that has gone into it! Good luck with it, hope the rest of the brew is trouble-free!

Don't worry about it Wez, it's the same with anything epic, there has to be a few twists and turns along the way. Benson is probably having a bit of a snicker about it himself.

Should be ok Wez, as you say the hop utilization will be a difficult to replicate it it turns out spot this brew :)
Presumably you could not have stuggled on with one element ?
Thing is with big brews, you get big problems when it goes wrong. My last big one was split into two buckets and for some reason I never bothered to check for yeast head, for 4 or 5 days. Don't know why, always do, must have been to busy, never had a problem before! Well one bucket was as flat as a witches tit. Added more yeast but it tasted just a bit strange after fermenting. Bottled and kegged both bucket eventually, but both developed the antiseptic taste  taste. 11 gallons down the drain, a very sad day indeed.
Your predicament has spurred me on to add a third element to my big boiler, one of those short Beeker ones.I have two horizontal element quite a way off the bottom. I can then do smaller brews in it and turn this element first to start to get the temperature up sooner and it will save me getting in the do dos like you ;)
Bit of brew porn called for to cheer us up. You can see what I mean,

yeah one element wasn't doing it with 80L wort

I'm sure all will be well tomorrow night :thumb:

Good strong rolling boil on the go, should be done by 1/4 to 8 :thumb:

Time for a :drink:

I read your post on monday regarding the element failing.

I went on and brewed a bitter (a replacement for one which was attacked by fruit flies   ) and guess what..

my boiler failed. Luckily I only had about 55l (ran out of water in the hlt forgot to put more on during the mash) and was able to struggle on with one element. Mines now foaming away at 20c.

This has been a great but sad thread.

Cheers :thumb: :thumb:
