Hi there,

Is it normal for bottles to look completely flat while conditioning? Does this just mean that the seal is good and so no gas is escaping?

Thanks!

What do you mean by flat ? Are you expecting a head on the surface ?

If you look very carefully you 'might' be able to see tiny bubbles at the bottom of the bottles which rise slowly and possibly disappear as the pressure forces the CO2 into the beer. You'll probably need a torch.

You only get bubbles once you open the bottle and relive the pressure and the dissolved CO2 precipitates out of solution. While the cap is on and pressure maintained then the CO2 is sat in solution in the beer.

One of life's lottery moments... The second before you pop the cap has your bottled beer carbonated???

You could cheat and use PET bottles and give the bottles a squeeze. If you have successful carbonation the bottle will be hard.

You can get little bubbles during carbonation which are nice to watch. They don't create a head though. If you get them then early on they can get to the top and leave little patches of white, later on they disappear as they rise (like the one on the right that starts off quick, slows down and shrinks)...

you shouldnt see any head in your bottles if you do you may have a leak.. leaky swingtops sometimes have a small head - obviously not a good thing
