Just wondering as I always go away for a few days around Christmas, would I be able to take one of the white plastic kegs full of beer or do they not travel well? I remember when I worked in pubs we could never disturb the cask beers because it would shake them around too much. Is that the same with home brew?

Good question, my guess would be that if you can try to keep it steady as possible in transit and then give it overnight on arrival it should turn out not too bad

The beer itself will be fine, it's the settled yeast that may cause a problem, so....
How much yeast is there in the barrel?
Is it a yeast that flocculates well? Some don't; the first sign of movement and they re-suspend and take time to settle again.
How much movement will the barrel be subjected to?
What is your tolerance for slighty cloudy beer?
