I have just ordered a kit with the intention of bottling the beer (lager)

I quite like the idea of making up a bitter and putting it in a barrel, I seem to read very different reports of the length of time the beer will keep in the barrel, some say it needs to be drunk in the first 7-10 days or it goes past its best, others I have seen say it will keep up to a year????

What is the general opinion on this.

Thanks,

I always barrel. The last beer i finished on boxing day. I'd been drinking since bonfire night and in my opinion it only got better! I usually drink them in about 5/6 weeks and not had a bad one yet!

Thanks for the replies, I think I will go for bottling as it seems to give better flexibility for the extra time taken to do the job.
