one of the best and most usefull tips i was ever given about shaving was to slow down.
cheap razors and disposables and all the rest were invented so a perspn can stand infront of a mirror and slash his throat in 3 minutes flat and get up and go.

a proper shave should run a round abouts 10 mins plus skin heating time (hot towels) or as i do straight after a hot shower or a bath.

and normally the skin is shaved twice, once to remove most and once to remove all

its just our modern lives dont allow for it much

Hehee, I saw this thread a wee while ago and thought i'd like to give it a go but never had the bottle!

Well ordered a Timor razor from Connaught on Thursday night, it arrived today just before this mornings shave and so I wanted to have a go. Well all I can say is wow!!! A few spots but got an alum stick which kind of worked. I've got quite a thick beard so need to do quite a few passes with a cartridge blade so all in it takes about a similar amount of time!!!

Glad I listened and even more took the plunge!!!

hiya curryholic,i went for the timor aswell in gunmetal, :thumb: got me some ARKO soap this week aswell,a new badger brush on its way from abroad,
i had my first shave useing the timor blade suplied with the razor, spot on felt great, tried a second shave with the blade,no good, felt blunt, will have another go tommorow night, with a new blade, got a couple to try derby,s and feathers and the lord,s that arived with the razor,
you do get a better feeling shave with a blade rather than the multi,s,
i am allready fancying straight, better stick with the timor for a wee while, unless i get a good deal on a straight

Real men don't shave :P

Really lazy men anyway. I've been called somewhat of a weirdy beardy before

Don't worry Kolin you wait til Movember I'll be a fuzzyface too! all for charity mate!

Shame just discovered the delights of Paraso pre/post shave cream mmmmmmm ;)

I approve of Movember, even if the gits who give me playful grief about my facefuzz follow suit without any irony hehe, it's for a very good cause.

That said when I used to shave I very much appreciated the feel of a good aftershave balm.

Us men " up North " manage with a Black and Decker rotary sander, with a good dose of red diesel afterwards.... no problems !

Spots will disappear with maturity ( which is different to age ) :D

and if anyone approaches my neck with a cut throat, open single edged blade.............I'm gone.

Black and Decker?
Luxury, sheer luxury.

We had to put up with our old dad, holding us down by our ears with hid 'obnail boots, sand was used as shaving foam, with a rusty ******* file for starters, then wire wool with scrapings from a welders bench. All that after 26 hours down t'pits.

Try telling that t' youth o' today .

(I'll get me own coat, cheers)

I've bought a DE razor now after having my first wet towel shave at a Turkish barbers, it was awesome. I just need to find someone to lather me up and give me a face massage after I have a shave now :D .I've been fed up with my crappy gillette mach 3 for a while now and decided to give real mans shaving a shot! I'll end up sliced to fcuk and wrapping it after 1 shave no doubt!
the kit I bought is here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004ELCXHE/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

Can someone advise how many shaves the blades will last on average? i don't have the heaviest growth but If I'm lazy it can get a bit scruffy. the blades that come with it are 'derby extra' do all blades fit the all razors? I've noticed people mention 'feathers' 'merkur' 'astra', will they all fit onto this razor.

cheers guys.if you hear about a throat being slit in Dunfermline in the news then its been nice knowing you all!

I normally get about 3 shaves out of a blade, but I am being very lazy at the moment and letting my growth get too long. . . . I also do three passes when I shave (WTG XTG and ATG)

All Double edged blades will fit your razor.

I like the Derbys, but you do need to try different blades to really find the ones that work for you. (Stay away from Feathers until you have the technique down right)

Get your technique right, using one blade and one soap/cream before trying other blades or creams and when you do change ONE thing at a time, and use that new combination for a week or so, before trying to decide if it is better or worse than the previous one

This is probably obvious but Take your time!! I normally allow 20-30 minutes for a shave, most of that is getting the beard 'moisturised', plenty of hot water, and soap. if you want to shave after a hot shower that is a great way of getting the beard to absorb water and soften. What I have been known to do is at the end of the shower rub some shaving foam/soap into the beard and leave it while I then lather the brush. Lather the face without removing the soap and then start.

For your first few goes make one pass with the grain (WTG), yeah you'll miss some spots but you have to do it again tomorrow anyway.

DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE, let the weight of the razor do the work. to get the correct angle put the head of the razor onto your face at 90 degrees and then adjust the angle until the blade starts cutting.

Short strokes, clean the razor frequently

If there is no soap . . . keep the razor away from it.

If it hurts when you pass the alum stick over the skin after the shave, you have either pressed to hard or gone over the skin to many times

Great advice Aleman.

And for everything you could possibly want to know and more its worth watching the videos by mantic59 on youtube.

It can be a little embarrassing watching video of blokes shaving though so its worth keeping another tab open with some porn which you can flick onto if the Mrs unexpectedly walks in, much easier to explain that away.

Here is a link to a great site, lot's of info and advice,
mind you it can become a bit addictive,i just been on last night and ordered up a couple of razor's from the usa, fella on the Badger & Blade forum, try plenty of blades as they are all dif in dif razor's,and every body is different, ime finding that out,
have been useing a 34c,been ok up to now, then tried my 38c last night with the same blade make Astra SP.and a totaly dif shave, mind you the 38c is a heavy beast, which i seem to prefer at the mo,

Oh, this is me completely. The sting on my neck after the shave is very sharp and very painful.

At 34 it looks like I'm still learning how to shave.

DE shaving is a totally different beast to normal razors - as Aleman rightly points out (great guide BTW) the lack of pressure is the difference between a great shave and a scene from Sweeny Todd...

I normally get around 5 shaves out of a DE blade - I favour the P&G blades such as Astra, Permasharp and Gillette 7 O'clock greens. Also quite a fan of Supermax Platinum and BlueDiamonds too.

I also favour vintage DE razors, and use a 1955 Gillette superspeed and a 1931 Gillette goodwill.

I don't think I'll ever go back to cartridge razors, unless DE blade production ceases...but I've got about 15 years of blades in stock, so I should be ok until I get close to retirement at any rate!!!

Hiya,i am about to try some vintage razor's,just ordered my B.Y tv special from the states along with a slim,,just need a fatboy to add, then that will be it i hope,be hard to get a 1958 fatboy,
See i told you it get's addictive, real good shave's and plenty bit's to play around with,,
