Splitting a batch between bottles and kegs

Can you put half your brew into bottles and half into a pressure barrel?

Is there anything special you need to do to the barrell to deal with the extra headspace?

Yes, you could and if you are using a standard 5 gallon pressure barrel, you could give it a shot of CO2 to ensure proper pressure.

Also, you can buy half size pressure barrels...

+1 for getting a half size PB or two. Bit of extra initial outlay but you can fill to the brim and not worry about excess head space and they are smaller which can be handy.
