Hey folks,

I have woodforde's wheery real ale in the fermenter for week now and took a sample to check the gravity. It's been quiet for a couple of days now, but as soon as I took that sample and closed it up again, airlock has started burping again.

Gravity is a little higher than the kit says (1016), so was going to give it a day or two. What I was wondering is does giving it a stir/shake help or do any harm? Or really wondering why taking a sample has started some activity again.

I'm seeing all sorts of threads about whether you should stir etc. and lots of people saying no need to or don't, and some get into details about yeasts I don't follow. These seem to be more about actual brews and not kits which is more confusing. This is only my second brew so most of the detail goes over my head.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Baps.

Edit: maybe this should go in the kit forum? Apologies if it's in the wrong place.

It’s possible that disturbing it and taking the sample has caused it to degas a little which would explain the airlock starting up again. I don’t think you will do it any harm at all to give it either a swirl around or a stir with a sanitised spoon and then leave it another week. You may also find that increasing the temperature a little helps.
