I haven't made this public knowledge on here yet but those of you who know me know i was working on the buildings all my life and as that has dried up for the next 200 million years in Ireland, i got on to an IT support specialist course in my home town. We are due to sit our CompTia A+ exams in November and our network+ next May. Well at dinner time on Monday just gone i was asked if i wanted to have a go at the Network+ exam on Wednesday morning because they had some vouchers that would expire if they weren't used, of course with me been a thick paddy, i didn't hesitate to say yes
It was only after that i realised the mountain i had put in my way, i worked like i never have before and on Wednesday morning i scored 845/900 :D
As i have pretty much covered the A+ stuff and knowing i will pick up enough knowledge about network+ (that i've already forgot :? ) i need in class, i have until next July on this course and as the ball is rolling i've decided to try to pick up at least one more cert before the course ends, I have been looking around but there's so much i'm not sure which way to go and i'd love to hear any suggestions on what is in demand from any of you guys working in the industry?

Cheers :thumb:

Well done! :drink: :drink:

Any specific area of the industry that appeals to you?

IT support can cover a huge variety if industry areas - from oil to pensions - and so long as you can support the systems they use, you could find work in any of them.

Try and move quick though - with up to a million people leaving goverment jobs and the private industries that rely on goverment contracts in the next year or so, competition is going to be keen :hmm:

Nice one! Well done and congrats, outstanding performance!

How about finding something related to beer?

;)

As you know I accidentally let it slip on the forum that you were back at College. BUT..no one noticed ;) However..now it's public...Bloody Fantastic Kevin
Re a job etc.. It's no good asking me.....I am...or was..in Public Service  God knows what they are going to do with us  :(

Well done big man!

You've certainly worked hard enough for it

Well done AT or should that be @ now ;)

I was a plasterer along time ago and had to find other work due to the recession in the early 90's, best thing that ever happened to me, but don't regret a thing I learnt on site

I got my A+ a while back now plus a shedload more - i used to teach it too.
Network security is another course worth doing as is the Microsoft route to systems administrator.
Big companies are always on the lookout for sys admin - or the A+ route you can build em yourself or do sys support. Pick the new parts up at computer fairs and build new machines custom built.
I used to go to Bowlers in manchester for all my stuff.

Outstanding scores A T! I work in IT but in software development. It sounds like what you are doing is more system admin type work than software dev. Is that true?

Network security is always a plus. Get plenty of web knowledge/training as more and more companies more to cloud computing models. That will force the IT staff to have a much tighter understanding of web server configuration and administration. Having a good hardware background (Cisco, etc.) does not hurt either.

No matter what you choose, good luck to you! With scores like that, you'll do fine.
