    So frustrating....

I've got two top tap king kegs, I've been lucky but I do this on every brew: Vaseline on the cap seal. Vaseline on the tap seal. Tighten the cap with a spanner thingy. Sometimes it's difficult to get off again. I squirt with a bit of co2 when I tighten the cap, but it is primed to 1.5 vols...

Over did it with bittering hops

I brewed a bitter recently which was based on GH summer ale, but I left it after the boil for another 10 minutes or so, so the hop timings got effectively extended by 10 minutes. Anyway after 4 weeks in the bottle it way too bitter, but another 4 weeks and it's mellowed nicely

    Top Cropping Question

Yeah as Nottsbeer says, you cropped too late. I haven't used WLP013 so I can't say for certain, but the best time to crop is when the gravity has fallen by about 50% (give or take 10%). I.e.if you're fermenting 1.040 wort and expecting it to reach 1.010, you want to crop at about 1.025.

    Top Cropping Question

Hi, sorry I haven't been on in a while. I don't use any calculators, all I do is make sure I have what looks like the right amount for a 23 litre brew. It's not very scientific. I stopped using my 1469. I did 5 beers with it and it became malty and continued fermenting in the bottle. For the...

    Yeast cropping/harvesting

Layer 2 is also yeast, but it hasn't settled yet. It looks good to me though athumb.. My harvests look like this for days whilst they are on the shelf, but after a few days in the fridge it compacts nicely. Having said that I haven't used M47 so I don't know how flocculant it is. Some...

    Blockages

I have a GF not a BZ but they're similar enough on this regard. I tried pellets with a hop spider and got loads of debris going through the filter. So I whirlpooled and it reduced but still got a bit. Then I used whole hops and haven't had a problem since with no hop spider and no need to whirlpool

    Yeast cropping/harvesting

For what it's worth I've harvested trub as well but not for some time. It's a good way of reusing yeast though. As an aside I wonder whether you've harvested enough yeast in your photo, I'd expect the jar to be at least half full. When the yeast compacts down there won't be much there. You...

    Yeast cropping/harvesting

I don't bother washing the yeast, there are lots of opinions on methods of storing yeast. My tried and tested method is to crop the yeast at its most viable, let it ferment out what's left of the half fermented beer you take with it tighten the lid and then store it in the fridge under the beer...

    Gushers again

The kit included a pack of goldings pellets for dry hopping. I hadn't dry hopped for a number of years but previously just chucked whole hops in the FV. So I just tipped the pack of pellets in, then realised I should have put then in a bag or a strainer of some kind once it was too late...

    Yeast cropping/harvesting

For info I pitched the yeast on Sunday evening and cropped yesterday evening. The gravity had fallen from 1.042 to 1.024

    Gushers again

The yeast sticks to the bottle and when I poured one through a tea strainer it definitely looked like hops. But if you don't dry hop then it's probably not hop debris
