    The Wine Loft, St Helens.

...and Hi from another ex-Wiganer - in Bristol for the last 35 years. I started my brewing by buying kits from A&B Temple at age 17 in 1971. The kits comprised a bag containing some anonymous kind of grain, a bottle of malt extract, a packet of ancient dried-out, anonymous hops, and a sachet of...

    Grainfather G30 - safety valve

At the risk of going further off-topic (actually, not a risk but a certainty - sorry), the german V is pronounced as the English F, so "Volk" is almost the same pronunciation as English "Folk", but with more emphasis on the "l", whereas the English swallow the "l". Here endeth the lesson.

    Grainfather G30 - safety valve

The german for the English "folk" is "Volk". Not Nazi, just german.

    Grainfather G30 - safety valve

I also removed the ball & spring from my V2 G30 and fitted a quick release recirculation arm. No more blockages at that point, though the pump has blocked up once or twice. However, I have switched on the pump on occasion without the arm attached and without turning the tap off: fortunately...

    Live on a canal boat...

Probably because of the cost and effort of administering a charge on a "house" that frequently moves between different adminstrative areas and has no fixed postal address.

    Brewbrain gone offline?

Brewbrain website and Float readings resurfaced at around 20:30 last night. Apparently, from reading a number of online reviews, it's a fairly frequent occurrence but it's the first time it's happened to me in over 30 brews.

    Brewbrain gone offline?

Is anyone having trouble getting readings from your Float hydrometer? Mine stopped recording after 05.30 UK time this morning. Trying to access brewbrain.nl website with a browser and I'm getting HTTP 502 error (bad gateway). I've rebooted my router, tried different browsers, different PCs and...

    Greetings from Across the Pond

There are presently 20 active breweries in Bristol, some of which have their own tap rooms... New Bristol Brewery; Bristol Beer Factory; Left Handed Giant Brewpub; Little Martha; Moor Beer plus a couple already mentioned. The Shakespeare on Victoria Street (not the Shakespeare mentioned...

Just wondering what size bottles your 5ml/bottle relates to? Presumably 500ml?

    Brewfather targeted gravity Vs actual

You can go back and manually change the OG figures in Brewfather... So if you've moved on to the "Fermenting" stage, your display will look something like this (Android version).. At the top of the screen, you can see tabs for the four stages - Planning - Brewing - Fermenting - Conditioning. If...

Equipment For Sale 5L Keg tap - free

I have an ancient (circa 1986) dispensing tap for 5L mini-kegs, bought when I lived in Germany - free to anyone who can make use of it. Just cover the cost of postage - probably around £4.50 - or collect from S Glos. It's probably been used less than 5 times. It requires no CO2 cylinders and...

    Its too hot.

Opposite way round: some railway lines reportedly buckled, and several houses on a street in London caught fire when wildfire from adjoining land spread to the street.

    Which acid?

Phosphoric 75% sold by Get 'er Brewed. Usage rates can be calculated in Brewfather, BeerSmith3, Bru 'n Water, and probably others (Brewer's Friend?).

    Iodine test (starch haze)

I always do an iodine starch test - every mash. I have an old eye dropper... one drop of tincture of iodine in a teaspoonful of mash is sufficient. If there's any starch present, it'll go dark. If not, it'll stay orangy-brown. As others have said, dispose of the sample:you don't want iodine in...
