I have just refreshed the chicken shed, a few overdue jobs, ready for the winter. Our girls will be inside by choice this year. They have loads of space and it keeps them safe.

Thought we would get a few additional hens too.... That had turned into a mission. I didn't realise point of lay hens had become an endangered species

... Nobody seems to have any.

And more shocking I saw this advert...

Local Organic free range eggs.
£5 for 6. £8 per dozen.

Is he selling any?

Is that sort of price normal now ?

I have never seem eggs anywhere near that price, even free range organic.
Our hens had stopped laying for several weeks and just started up again, not sure why at this time of year, the farmer next door had the same.
I think biologically if there are hens then there must be POL hens around otherwise all hens would go extinct

however I have not looked ofr any for a long time, we have 2 rare breeds Norfolk Grey and Marsh Daisies and they hate being indoors even in deep winter, they were so miserable during AI lockdown.

The Marsh Daisies won't even sleep in the coup they prefer to sit on a perch in the run outside even in a blizzard, I was so sorry for them last winter, this year I will enclose the coup so they are more indoors.

That’s not normal. 1.5-1.8 here for 1/2 doz from 2 places I pass in my was to work.

We sell ours at 1.5 to friends and family.

Feed has done up a few quid a bag but bedding seems to be the same so unsure why the huge price hikes.

Driven by supermarket prices ehich went up massively over the last 12 months, none had supply due to bird flu, farmers going out of business.

Our 4 are free range, one of them used to lay her eggs in a friend's shed but she's obviously found somewhere else now. No idea where the others lay or if. Haven't had an egg for months now. Starting to question their value

How often do you eat or use the eggs?
Do they lay a lot more than you can eat or vice-versa? I'd imagine it's breed specific.

We do help our girls out where we can. Daylight is why they go off lay. July here has been a bit overcast & dark. (tomato plants are suffering tool) Normally happens in October. They will go into moult (not that one

) up the protein to help them get over the stress. Fishy cat food is good.

We've got four, 2 lay year round, another one starts up in March and finishes around November, the other has never layed. Unfortunately it's my eldests chicken, otherwise it would be fajita by now.

We have 6 ish. We always have eggs. We give some away. We eat omletes and scrambled egg, which soon uses them up.
If we get a bit deep I make quiche (nothing like that enemic limp ***** in tecsburys) which makes easy lunches and supper. Boiled eggs too. Often eggs for breakfast.

And the world's best frying pan is a whole new thread.

Yeh, we have omelette once a week, scrambled/poached egg on toast, also as Mashbag make some quiche from time to time and freeze it, occasionally add it to a pasta dish, make pancakes, give a few away and sell a few.

We have half a dozen chooks. They lay more than we can use, so often give them away to friends at work. Have always refused payment for them, as they are surplus to our needs.
Get given the odd bottle of rum or bag of treats for the dogs as a "thank-you", which is nice...

Big problem is there are no poultry shows/meets. Think this is the 3rd year (of no meets), so very few stock available.

Easter Eggs / Chicks is all about hatching stock for the winter months.

A POL chicken is about 18 weeks old, but many don't lay until weeks in mid 20's. Hens hatched at Easter will come into lay about now - before the dark nights - and continue to lay over winter.

Many pure breeds will stop laying in winters after the 1st year. If looking for Eggs over winter, go for a Hybrid. Bread for laying and will eat less too.

We have led lights, to help out over the winter. JUST had some news that some commercial birds have come up for rehoming next month. Not quite what I had in mind but...
